Clemanson and Cie issue from Lyon France during the Constitutional Period. Rarely seen except for line drawings, it differs from the more commonly seen types depicting cannon, flags and drums. In it's place, surrounding the obverse fasces, is the legend that was quickly replaced with the canon, flags and drum. Authorities connected with the Constitutional government in Lyon rejected this initial design due to this legend being similar to certain 'official' coins (3, 6, 12 Deniers) by Augustin Dupre, and particularly to the reference to 'La Roi' (The King).
Provenance of this piece is from the Richard Margolis Collection. He stated that this example was only one of two known to him. He purchased this example from Hans Schulman in Oct 1952, and it was in his collection until the Stack's Bowers sale of 12 June 2025, Lot# 70109.
The odd surfaces indicate that the planchets were cast and then struck, or pressed. These are crude pieces with no edge treatment or collars used. See the normal Clemanson type (canon, flags, etc.) here in the Moneta Museum in copper and the scarcer bell metal issues. Copper: [ link ] ; and Bell metal:
