Independence Commemorative. Previous coins issued for the area, when it was known as the Gold Coast, were issued as a British colony (all dated 1796, 1818). The state of Ghana, consisting of the Gold Coast and Togoland were the first African areas to become independent, March 6, 1957. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, commemorated here, and on most coins of Ghana, was instrumental in the independence movement and their first president. He advocated for a United Africa. The decimal coinage now used is based on the "cedi", a unit based on cowrie shells, which were traded along the coast well into modern times. Eleven thousand of these ten Shilling pieces were struck, in a one year issue, in 1958.
The Dominion of Ghana was created in 1957, when the Gold Coast & British Togoland became independent. The Dominion of Ghana ceased to exist on 1 July 1960, when the Republic of Ghana was created - with Kwame Nkrumah as the first President of the Republic of Ghana (1960 - 66) until his dictatorship was overthrown in the 14 February 1966 Coup.
