A large cent in my 1853 type set. Designed by Christian Gobrecht; it has a plan edge. At this date the "Mature Head" of 1844 has been adopted as well as the use of large letters. Mintage on this date is 6.641 M. This example has what appears as a very thin, strong & straight cut below 'CENT'; I do not know if this was produced at the mint, it's from the diagonal and raises the metal up so that it almost appears as a die crack or scratch.
