I finally acquired the Clemanson 2 Sols in excellent condition in Bell metal. I believe that the bell metal versions, which are scarcer, were made after the copper or bronze ones.
These present some iconic images associated with the French Revolution: Fasces, Liberty cap, flags, drums and cannon. These are central pieces to the Monnaies De Confiance series of necessity tokens, in the face of near worthless paper assignats, several tokens were issued for various reasons, not least of which were to pay employees. These were crudely struck in Lyon in copper & Bell metal, this is the bell metal issue, which is scarcer. See also see the Monneron Brothers for the bulk of this French Revolution series.

Not much is known about the Clemanson operation in Lyon, another hot-bed of Jacobin activity in France. He may have been an iron monger there during the Revolution. Please watch this post for a paper I intend to write about the Clemanson operation in Lyon.
