Description: GREENLAND: Danish Colony, 10 Kroner (11.75g), 1922 (1926), KM-Tn49, Ivigtut Cryolite Mining & Trading Co. issue, one-year type, variety with reeded edge, XF, ex Dr. Wolfgang Schuster Collection. Central design of a seated polar bear facing left; inside a shield which has a winged miner's helmet on top, a hammer and tool on left, a spade and pick axe on right. OB legend: KRYOLITH*MINE OG HANDELS*SELSKABET 10 KR∙ (The Cryolite Mining and Trading Company). Danish Royal Mint (Den Kongelige Mønt), Copenhagen, Denmark. Actually struck in 1926 with 1922 dies. Ivigtut is the only locality outside of Siberia which is known to produce the mineral kryolite (or kryolith) used in the manufacture of aluminium. After WWI the use of aluminum exploded and cryolite is an essential component of its manufacture. Ivigtuut a operated a company town where Danes and locals could stay during the season open-pit mining operation. The town was isolated and could only be reached by sea in the summer months and by plane. When the U.S. Army attempted the first the first air circumnavigation of the world the two biplanes (Chicago & New Orleans) stopped there in order to replace their engines. During WWII the USA took control of Greenland because the Germans had occupied the Denmark proper. Active mining continued into the 1960's with stockpiles exhausted in 1987

Description: Greenland was discovered in 976 by a group of Norsemen led by Eric the Red who had been exiled from Iceland. Three settlements were established on the southern coast. These remained until the Ice Age came in and they were no longer able to sustain themselves. Official coinage for the island commenced in 1926 through 1964. There were a number of tokens issued by private companies from the mid 19th century well into the 20th century. This is an example of general coinage, a 25 øre minted in 1926. These were holed in the USA to 1941 to distinguish them from the 1 Krone coin.

The only coinage was produced in 1941 by the British who occupied the islands while Denmark was under German rule. This is a 25 øre coin from that period. These coins are similar to the Danish coins of the time but lack the mint officials and moneyer's initials.

Description: The Danish West India Guinea Company annexed the islands of Saint Thomas and St. John in in 1672 and 1718. The island of Saint Croix was purchased from the French West India Company in 1733. The Danish company went bankrupt in 1754 and the King of Denmark–Norway took possession. The USA purchased the islands in 1917 for $25M. They are now known as the U.S. Virgin Islands. Coinage for the islands started in 1740 and continued through 1917. Coinage used the Danish standard through 1848 and adopted decimal coinage in 1859. This one is a ten skilling piece minted in 1848.
