Greenland was discovered in 976 by a group of Norsemen led by Eric the Red who had been exiled from Iceland. Three settlements were established on the southern coast. These remained until the Ice Age came in and they were no longer able to sustain themselves.
Official coinage for the island commenced in 1926 through 1964. There were a number of tokens issued by private companies from the mid 19th century well into the 20th century.
This is an example of one of the token coinage, a 10 Kroner issued in 1922 by the Ivigtut Cryolite Mining and Trading Company.
