W.W. Wilbur - Slave Auctioneer 1846 Token

W.W. Wilbur Store Card Token of 1846. While Wilbur was an auctioneer of of practically everything, he was also an auctioneer of slaves. This token is classified as one from Charleston, South Carolina. See the linked monograph, including an old newspaper advertising a slave sale, below, for the full story on these and the varieties that are available. This one has Type 3 obverse which includes the added statement "Going At Only A Penny," and the "bushy Palmetto" tree reverse.

NGC holder - XF 45. References: M-SC-10. This is a scarcer variety with the legend "Going At Only A Penny" added under the auctioneer figure. These come in brass and the less common one, like this, in copper.
