Emperor Shen Zong (1068-85)
Yuan Feng Tong Bao (clockwise)
Cast 1078-85)
Reverse plain
Diam: 23.8mm, 2.8g

Hartill 16.233

Rather unusual top stroke to Yuan. Bao a bit different from Hartill's illustration.

Possibly a Vietnamese copy. Any comments?

Following received from a member of CoinTalk:

I don't know anything about Japanese coins but my guess is that it is a "small character" version Nagasaki coin similar to the one illustrated at this website:

Following comment received from Luke Roberts, who has an excellent web page on Nagasaki coins - [ link ]

Coin is of the "small character" type, and the sub type would be "falling ho" which refers to the low placement of the right character relative to the center square hole. As such it is a common variety worth a couple of dollars. The top gen character with the bump on the top line may just be a casting error but it may be an unknown type. The only way to know the latter is to find an identical one somewhere
