The Danish West India Guinea Company annexed the islands of Saint Thomas and St. John in in 1672 and 1718. The island of Saint Croix was purchased from the French West India Company in 1733. The Danish company went bankrupt in 1754 and the King of Denmark–Norway took possession. The USA purchased the islands in 1917 for $25M. They are now known as the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Coinage for the islands started in 1740 and continued through 1917. Coinage used the Danish standard through 1848 and adopted decimal coinage in 1859.
This coin is a two skilling piece minted in 1848.
