Roman Empire - Constantinian Era - Crispus as Caesar (316 - 326 A.D.), the only ranking he held. Crispus was the eldest son of Constantine I "The Great" with his first wife Minervina. As a teenager he was made Caesar in late 316 and was soon off to serve and train. He became an honored military leader by first leading a campaign against the Germanic tribe, the Alamanni, which this coin celebrates. His second great victory, against a much greater force, was the defeat of Licinius' navy. The capture of a large number of transport vessels allowed a bridge (flotilla) to be built across the Dardanelles, allowing his father to march his Legions into Asia to finalize the defeat of Licinius in the Second Lincinian War.
OB: FL. IVL. CRISPVS NOB. CAES; laur. head r.
RX: ALAMANNIA DEVICTA; victory advancing r. left foot on captive, in ex., .SIRM. (Sirmium mint). Sear 3814; RIC49; 19.53 mm, 3.2 g; this piece is much better in hand than the photo, in fact it's a "Best of Type".
