To me the most interesting of the small cents is the Flying Eagle. The mint began experimentation on small cents in in the 1850's and settled on this format and design 1856. Large cents had begun to be too expensive to produce. The trial strikes began in 1856 to present to congress for review and were 2000 were restruck. Regular circulation issues began in 1857 but ended after the 1858 mintage. The Large Cents were almost 11 grams of copper while this first small cent is 4.67 g. (19 mm) and made of an alloy of .880 copper and .120 nickel, giving it a lighter color that offers a variety of tones. Several varieties are available for each year, this 1858 has a large letter and small letter type of equal value. The trick is to find specimens that are fully struck, with no distracting spots or discoloration. I would say that the type collector would be wise to choose from NGC & PCGS graded examples.
