Issued by Huguenot-Walloon New Netherland Commission, these commemorative halves stirred up controversy due to their religious connection with the Churches of Christ in America. Obverse motif: Portraits of Admiral Coligny and William the Silent while the reverse depicts the "Nieuw Nederland" ship. These coins commemorate the (Tercentenary) 300th anniversary of the establishment of New Netherland (New York) by the Huguenots and Walloons in 1624. Mintage figures are 142,080 coins of all types. Designer of obverse and reverse was George T. Morgan (with approval and modifications by James Earle Fraser).
Interestingly, the two individuals depicted on the obverse of the coin had nothing to do with the event commemorated. I'm not an avid collector of the US commemorative halves but I do have a few, I have this because my family history in the US stems from Huguenots that settled in Virginia and made their way to N. Carolina.
