A second example of version 2 of 5. The key here is that KM's SCWC is wrong - all of these have evidence of reeding, most with just light signs that are intermittent. In other words, all were intended to have reeding, but the crude process of manufacture did not lend itself to completion. Variety is distinguished by the position or presents of Hainan Island, leaves, star and ribbon. The Chinese "little brown book" (Chinese Copper Catalog by Hua Pu, 1992) shows 5 varieties based upon the island alone. From the relative values indicated versions v.2 & v.3 are the most common, v.1 is priced x3 of those, v.4 is x5, and v.5 is x10; these multiplied factors are based on catalog prices. The total number of varieties is unknown, with examples too scarce to assemble in quantity in order to make a definitive study. Hence, the attempt to document them here - PLEASE HELP!
CHINA: CHINESE SOVIET REPUBLIC: AE 5 fen, ND (1932), Y-507, original strike, issue of the Kiangsi Soviet. The Chinese Soviet Republic is often referred to in historical sources as the Jiangxi Soviet (after its largest component territory, the Jiangxi-Fujian Soviet). It was established in November 1931 by future Communist Party of China leader Mao Zedong, General Zhu De and others, and it lasted until 1937.
Here are a number of RARE articles on Communist Chinese Soviet coins & notes from the Moneta Library:
