I believe Chios was a holding of Genoa (Italy) before the Ottoman conquest.

Your correct. I looked up the period of Genoese rule, and it said that it lasted from 1261 to 1566 when the Turks invaded. Genoa maintained control over Chios by paying off the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. But when their power and influenced wained, they lost control of the territory as a result.
