I'm not sure of the Marianne identification, would that mean the Statue of Liberty in NY harbor is Marianne and not Lady Liberty? Marianne sows wheat and not rice, I'm I right? Description: The title says all I know, it's supposed to be a Allied Forces issue of France in 1944. These are commonly available in much better shape but without these wonderful colors. If you know more, such as a catalog reference, please let me know more so I can include it here.

Description: This French colony features a nice portrait of a Winged Liberty with ships at dock in the background. As a major port in the Indian Ocean, near Madagascar, this design is also seen on their 2 and 5 Franc pieces. The reverse features sugar cane which is a cash crop on the island.

Description: This is a great design by Patey, and this depiction of a South American Indian on a possession of France, makes this coin in demand in higher conditions. Special strikes and those done in silver also exist. This coin was struck again in 1921 and also in a 50 Centimes denomination. I believe this coin is also known to be the one with the most sides, while looking round, it actually has 20 sides. The reverse image is of a major source of revenue for this island near South America, sugar cane. Mintage for both years 700k each.

Description: The hub of French Oceania is Tahiti of the Society Islands. Another well known archipelago is that known as the Marquesas. All four denominations issued were struck in 1949 or 1952. All have a similar obverse and reverse designs. All have a privy mark of 'a' and were struck in Paris. Designed by the great designer Bazor.

Description: Encasement label states 2 Sapeque, my old KM only shows it as a Sapeque, but the "2" character on the reverse indicates the label is right.

Description: Encompassing most of what is today Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, this French colony was very influential in the region. The design is interesting in that is shows a figure of Liberty or of France holding a protective cover over female representing S.E. Asia. Too bad their protective cloak as not always benevolent or protective.

Description: During the issue period of 1789 this French colony was known as Colony of Cayenne (like the pepper). This area, particularly the offshore islands became known for the French prison of "Devil's Island" with it's famous prisoner Capt. Alfred Dreyfus. I've been assured this is an original piece and not one of the many common counterfeits struck in contemporary times in Birmingham, England. Cochin China - Vietnam

Description: This is an example of the second issue of the Sapeque of French Cochin China. Struck in Paris in 1879 it replaced a temporary issue composed of a 1 Centime of France (Y#41) with a center hole punch from the mint at Bordeaux. A literal reading of the reverse would seem to indicate 2/1000 for the denomination which has been interpreted as 2 Sapeque, this is incorrect, it's a 1 Sapeque piece that replaced the smaller center punched Sapeque of 1875 (K).

Description: Windward Islands; Isles du Vent - 1731 H; Louis XV of France. KM's max condition listing of this and the more common 12 Sols is XF. This very scarce coin is NGC MS 63 Uncirculated and in hand is much better than the photo. The coin retains all of its original luster. These islands make up the southern chain of the Lesser Antilles. Visted by Columbus in 1493 and again in 1502, they were occupied by France for strategic reasons in 1635. After being lost to Great Britain, then regained, they were lost again following the Napoleonic Wars. This photo was taken before I had it encapsulted. Looking up Isles du Vent or Windward Isles on-line will probably bring up pages to the island group in French Polynesia. Apparently the island chain for this coin is not nearly as popular for tourist and wind surfers. Coin group of islands is in the eastern Caribbean Sea that constitute the southern part of the Lesser Antilles. They include Martinique, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada. Their name refers to their position further upwind, in terms of the prevailing southeastern winds , than the Leeward Islands. For some reason the slab has the name as "Isle De Vent" which may be an the English spelling for the French version of the Windward Islands. Only one other (VG) has been graded by NGC. This coin was sold at a Heritage Auction (3 Jan 2012, NYC) for $1600 before fees. OB: LUD XV D G FR ET NAV REX (w/ H under portrait) rx: ISLES DU VENT - 1731
