REV: KEINE BANN WARE, DER GROSSDAMPFER, LUSITANIA, DURCH EIN DEUTSCHES, TAUCHBOOT VERSENKT, 5 MAI 1915 Translation: No Contraband!, the liner Lusitania sunk by a German submarine. Engraver: Karl Goetz Entering passenger service with the Cunard Line in 1907, the Lusitania continued the line’s heavily-traveled service between Liverpool and New York City. After the outbreak of World War I, however, relations between Great Britain and Germany diminished, as the two became enemies within the conflict. This lead to Germany’s declaration of submarine warfare upon the British Isles and a ‘no-sail zone’ for any vessel flying the British flag. On 7 May 1915, the Lusitania was identified by a German U-Boat, torpedoed, and sank in 18 minutes, killing over 60% of the passengers. The vessel went down 11 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland, and instantly became an iconic symbol for American involvement into the now global conflict. Case of the United Kingdom restrike: German type a and d have a diameter of 57mm whereas the British medals have a diameter of 55mm. An American copy from the time also exists, a Japanese copy has been made in the 70's and other modern museum reproductions and modern couterfeits also exist. [Numista.com]

Description: An example of WWI emergency money for the Duchy of Brunswick, Lower Saxony a year or more after the end of the First World War. I like the rendition of the horse and the fact that most of the very light rust is on the 10 Pfg. side. Appears uncleaned and shinier than the photo would indicate. 'Herzogtum' means duchy in German.

Description: Site of the historically famous and important Protestant Reformation of Martin Luther, where he nailed the 95 thesis demands to the church door. I deed to do some research to determine if the church depicted here is the one in question. There's a bit of an unusual denomination here: KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE, that's 20 characters which would literally translate as Small Change Emergency [Pfennigs]. Here the zinc is a fuzzy natural tone.

Description: I obtained another of these. It has less rust but is not in any better condition really. I don't know if there was a famous Dog Fight Ace from the Duren area or not. These appear to have been 'aluminized' to provide a nicer finish. Most examples show no remaining finish.

Description: Here is the Stadt Duren version of the helmeted soldier, here with an "SD" in the field. A similar coin, was issued for Weissenfels (50 Pfennig 1918, see at this http://www.moneta-coins.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=2259&title=weissenfelswwi-soldier-50-pfg-&cat=881 ). The major difference in the portrait is that here the metal stud is missing, I believe all German WWI helmets had this stud on both sides of the helmet.

Description: Another in the series of WWI worker scenes I think are interesting. Here this unusual design depicts a cogwheel, hammer and engineers' compass on a sky with clouds. In exergue are the words "Arbeit Bringt Brot" which means 'Work Provides Bread' - similar to the famous phrase above WWII prison/extermination camp entrances "Arbeit Macht Frei" or 'Work Will Set You Free.' Scarcer variety w/4 sun beams over highest cloud and dashed beam at hammer handle.

Description: Another in the series of Frankenthal near the Rhine river in the Pfalz region. This one shows an interesting scene of farm women cutting wheat. Fifty pfennig Kriegsgeld seems to be a scarcer one to obtain, especially in nice condition, which this one isn't. It's also a stretch to fit this in the Ceres group, but I'll do it anyway.

Description: This iron example has survived well in its natural tone, without much rust and never cleaned. Value 10 (pfennig, unstated) "Furs Vaterland" stands for 'For the Fatherland.' Here the narrative scene features a female factory worker in a munitions plant. She's managing some heavy-weight cannon shells with large, strong hands. Frankenthal is in the Pfalz, near the Rhine River.

Description: STADT FRANKENTHAL ✠KRIEGSGELD 1918✠ - A foundry worker is shown pouring molten metal into a mould, I don't know but it looks like he's wearing wooden shoes. Frankenthal is an industrial town in the Palatinate area. They issued several interesting designs featuring industry, agriculture and war related professions. It's not easy getting all of them in decent condition.

Description: Wattenscheid is an industrial town in Westphalia, to the east of Essen. A Coal Worker with a sledgehammer and paraffin lantern in front of mine works. The legend "Wir Schaffens Doch" means 'We Do It' which alludes to the hard work post WWI and high reparations payments.

Description: Bearing the wonderful coat of arms of Hamburg, this is a Half a Million Mark piece at the end of the Notgeld era. Soon the Rentenmark would be created to save Germany from complete ruin. "Freie Und Hansestadt Hamburg" (Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg). Hanseatic meaning a league of trading city partners on the Baltic Sea.

Description: This emergency Notgeld issue of a Walking Miner with pick-axe and miner's lamp completes the interesting types issued by Stadt Duren in 1918 - 1919. Other types, Miner, and WWI airplane Pilot can all be seen here in the Moneta Museum. I still need to acquire the soldier for Duren that has a variant, the portrait seems to be exactly the same coin issued for Weissenfels which can be seen here in the Museum. Here the variety is ME in 'Mein' forms 1 conjoined character, the common variety.

Description: Part of the nice little series of Duren, the Miner was featured on a least two denomination/issues, one a standing figure. The portrait type includes this Miner, a Soldier (sim. to Weissenfels) and the highly desireable Pilot at the stick of his WWI airplane (see it here in the Museum). All of them look to be a determined lot. Obverse legend "Kohle Bringt Gold" means 'Coal brings gold.'

German "Great Escape" POW Camp - Sagan

Description: This unassuming uniface WWI German P.O.W. camp token was an acquisition with two other Notgeld coins of Germany, only one of which I was interested in. That is until I looked into the attribution and history of this token and of the Camp at Sagan. Today the town of Zagan is a now part of Poland, before 1945 it was part of Germany (Silesia). This uniface coin, value 10, shows the legend "KREIGSGEFAGENLAGER *SAGAN*" (literally: "war captured camp"), there was also value 5, 2 and 1 Pfennig tokens issued of the same style. The 1 Pfennig is far scarcer. The 10 & 5 Pfg. tokens are found in two varieties. In WWII it became the site of another German WWII POW camp. It's claim to fame, other than it's cruelty to the prisoners, is the story of the "Great Escape". In March 1942, the town of Sagan became the location of the Stalag Luft III camp for captured airmen (Kriegsgefangenen Stammlager der Luftwaffe 3 Sagan). It was the site of the most courageous escape resulting in the execution of 50 prisoners. Under the leadership of Squadron Leader Roger Bushell (see Wikipedia) three tunnels with the names "Tom", "Dick" and "Harry" were dug by the prisoners (Mar. 1944). This episode of history was the subject of the 1963 film "The Great Escape," starring Steve McQueen and his Triumph T-6 motorcycle. In reality it was the biggest and the most deadly escape of pilots captured by Nazi Germany during the entire period of World War II. The number of prisoners attempting the escape was 200, of whom 76 managed to leave the camp; of those 73 were caught and 50 were executed on Hitler's orders. Just three successfully escaped, one to Gibraltar and two to Sweden. All three re-united in England eventually.

Description: Soest in Wesphalia notgeld featured a church steeple and image of a cleric holding a Bible and sword, St. PTR is there to represent the name of their Church, St. Patrokli. In 960, Bruno I, Archbishop of Cologne transferred relics of St. Patroclus from Troyes (d. 259), wealthy native of Troyes, known for his charity) to Soest. Since 964, they have been housed in what became the provost church St.-Patrokli-Dom (St. Patroclus' "Cathedral"), a particularly fine example of Romanesque architecture. The reverse has a circle surrounding the 50 PFG denomination that repeats TEN|TEN all the way around. Upton shows this late (1920) aluminum piece as #2-4 at 24mm. Norwegan tales about the Gothic King Theoderic the Great, identifies Soest (called Susat) as the capital of Attila's (?–453) Hunnic Empire. The actual location of Attila's capital has not been determined. The town was central to Wesphalia and a long time member of the Hanseatic League.

This is probably the most common, with another very scarce type featuring a WWI Pilot and another showing a very early rendition of the Hammer and Sickle. Description: What a surprise to discover this emergency coin from Weissenfels (White Meadows; Saxony), Germany dated 1918. It was issued as part of the huge series of "Notgeld" coins during the early Weimar Republic period of high inflation, and hoarding following World War I. This coin names the denomination as "KRIEGSGELD" (war-time money) rather than 'Notgeld' (emergency money). I have yet to see anyone separate the two designations, but it would seem obvious that notgeld is probably seen more often with dates beginning in 1919. I've been doing research on the origins of the Hammer & Sickle symbol used as a symbol for communist movements the world over. While there is evidence that the symbol was chosen as early as 1917 or 1918 based upon a design contest held by Lenin (won by Yevgeny Kamzolkin), there are also leads to Lev Rudnev even a bit earlier. See Chile for coins showing the Hammer & Sickle as early as 1895 from a pattern of 1894 by Tasset and Roty. Tasset also designed a coin for Romania (1911).
