The state of Ghana, consisting of the Gold Coast and Togoland were the first African areas to become independent, March 6, 1957. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, commemorated here, and on most coins of Ghana, was instrumental in the independence movement and their first president. He advocated for a United Africa. The decimal coinage now used is based on the "cedi", a unit based on cowrie shells, which were traded along the coast well into modern times. Eleven thousand of these ten Shilling pieces were struck, in a one year issue, in 1958. Moneta Sun, 12 Jan 2014 12:57:15 -0500
