Description: I haven't nailed this down exactly, but between Albrecht and his father the Hapsburg Empire was established, which lasted over 600 years. Vast areas of Germany were incorporated as well, later, at it's greatest extent, the Habsburg Empire extended far down the peninsula of Italy and the Balkan states. It was a major player in European history. The Empire is also spelled as Hapsburg, or known as the Austrian Empire was part of the Holy Roman Empire. This silver pfennig features the original 'smiley face' and appears to be uniface. I do not have any references of Medieval coinage, so I welcome any input you may have that I can incorporate here to complete the record. I have seen a similar type with significant differences that was attributing to Albert I and struck in Neustadt / Vienna for the years 1281 - 1298. Purchased from Bob Reis, he had it listed for 1287 - 1308, the end of Albrecht's reign. King Albert I was the eldest son of Rudolf I of Germany. Rudolf had been the first German monarch to be from the House of Hapsburg. Rudolf entrusted his son as ruler of the duchies of Austria and Styria, which he had seized from late King Ottokar II of Bohemia and defended in the 1278 Battle on the Marchfeld. Rudolf had a problem however securing the German throne for his son, Albert I. At Battle of Göllheim, Albert I was victorious and was chosen as King. He was a cunning and masterful diplomat and made alliances with his rivals to increase his own influence. He even made a keen alliance with Pope Boniface VIII. Interestingly, though he was seen as a harsh ruler, he protected the rights of both the serfs, who have previously had no rights and those of the often persecuted Jews. Albert I would eventually be murdered by his nephew, Duke John. Albrect I coins are extremely sought after by both collectors and buffs. One great coin would be the Pfennig circa 1282-1308 of the Harpy monster which has a woman’s body and bird’s wings.

Description: Ferdinand and Isabella (ND 1474 - 1504) - 1 silver Real minted in Seville. The coin appears to retain an original patina with very little, is well struck and little clipping and still showing full legends. Mass is 3.05 g and 25mm. The Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II & Isabella I were highly influential on the history of Spain and the world. Ferdinand was king of Aragon while Isabella was the Queen of Castile. Their union in marriage, and as shared monarchs of Spain, essentially united the kingdoms into a unified Spain although the two were actually governed separately. The symbolism of this unity is expressed on both sides of this coin. The obverse, shown in reverse order here, shows their Coat of Arms, what's not seen on the coin is their motto "'tanto monta', ("as much one as the other"). the outer legend here is : FERNANDVS ET A ELISABET:D The reverse features the symbol of Ferdinand II as a double yoke of the type used for oxen, as in two monarchs working together. For Isabella we see a bundle of arrows, not dissimilar to a fasces. The outer legend is: + REX : ET : REGINA : CAST : LEGION : ARAGO : the meaning being KING and Queen of Castile and Aragon.

Medallic fantasy issue, struck to commemorate the 1000th Anniversary of the Killing of Wenceslaus I during 929 A.D. Diameter: ~ 22mm Weight: 1.52gm; material: Silver Obverse: Bohemian lion above medallist´s signature (SEINOST) within inner circle. Legend: "PRAGA 929 . 1929" Reverse: Central Cross, legend: "VENCIEZLIVVS" Wenceslaus is the subject of the popular Saint Stephen's Day (celebrated on December 26 in the West) Carol, "Good King Wenceslas". It was published by John Mason Neale in 1853, and may be a translation of a poem by Czech poet Václav Alois Svoboda. The usual American English spelling of Duke Wenceslas' name, Wenceslaus, is occasionally encountered in later textual variants of the carol, although it was not used by Neale in his version. Wenceslas is not to be confused with King Wenceslaus I of Bohemia (Wenceslaus I Premyslid), who lived more than three centuries later. Description: A silver bracteate pfennig of Brandenburg. I liked it because It evoked the beginnings of German coins that prominently feature a spread eagle. Struck under Friedrich II (1440 - 1470). 17.2 mm; .24 g; RX: incuse of obverse. Saurma #4675. Frederick II was born in Tangermünde to Frederick I, Brandenburg's first Hohenzollern ruler, and his wife Elizabet, nicknamed "the Iron" (der Eiserne) and sometimes "Irontooth" (Eisenzahn), was a Prince-elector of the Margraviate of Brandenburg from 1440 until his abdication in 1470, and was a member of the House of Hohenzollern.

Description: Italy - Naples; ND (1472-88), AR Coronato of Ferdinand of Aragon (of Ferdinand and Isabella & Columbus fame). Mintmarks are C & C (Ob.& Rx). He had his own Kingdom of Aragon before his marriage to Isabella. This is a classic Renaissance portrait coin. Crowned bust of Ferdinand "C" behind. Description: A classic required for every historical collection - a nice silver penny of William I, (The Conqueror) from Normandy who displaced Harold II in 1066. William struck coins from 1066 to 1087. This one was struck in Canterbury (?) and is known as a PAXS type, obverse: crowned facing bust with sceptre, crown type 1, breaking linear circle at bottom, legend commences lower left "+PILLELM REX". This one features a nice bold full face portrait with some incomplete details in the legend. London mint (?), Wulfstan is the moneyer, S-1257. Specific mint/moneyer is unknown to me - can anyone help? I can provide additional photos. Another description of this type: GREAT BRITAIN. England. William I, the Conqueror. (King, 1066-1087).
