Description: Maximianus, 1st Reign (286 - 305 A.D.); IMP C M AVR VAL MAXIMIANVS PF AVG. Reverse: IOV ET HERCV CONSER AVGG; Jupiter & Hercules, standing facing each other; Jupiter, on the left, is holding out a globe and holds a scepter. Hercules is holding out Victory while holding a club and lion's skin. 'TR' between and 'XXI' in exergue. Nearly full silvering remains, XF+. RIC v.2# 624F, VM# 24, C.311

Description: This was my original acquisition until I got the better example. Caius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus (A.D. 284-305). Diocletian attempted to restore Rome and a big part of that effort was his famous monetary reform - celebrated with this post-reform Follis (1 AE Follis = 5 AE denarii). Here's a wonderful high grade example of this 2nd large scale issue that had a face value twice the previous issue. Struck by Constantius I, Londinium, 298-300 A.D. OB.- CONSTANTIVS NOB C; laureate cuirassed bust right Rx.- GENIO POPVLI ROMANI; Genius standing left holding patera + cornucopia RIC VI Lon 22 28mm; 10.1g; follis It was during the reign of Constantius as Caesar in Gaul and Britain that an official Roman mint was opened in Britain for the first time, in the provincial capital of Londinium. This coin was struck in the first years of the mint's operation, and has the distinctive London style prized by collectors. This is sharply, fully struck on a solid, heavy flan. Rated "Scarce" in RIC; Sear 3572.
