Description: Aurelian (270 - 275 A.D.) this coin struck between late 270 and early 272 AD. Antoninianus from the Antioch mint, 3rd Officina, 1st immission. Radiate & cuirassed bust of Aurelian on the obverse with 'S' below. Reverse features the laureate bust of Vabalathus (Palmyra) draped and cuirassed. g VF RIC V#381, BN1244-5. I'll update with a short history of this double portrait coin.

Description: Aurelian (270 - 275 A.D.), IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG. Reverse: SOLI INVICTO.; Sol standing left, his right arm raised, in the other hand he hold a globe, 1 captive at his feet, star above. Silvered VF; this is a variety with only one captive rather than two. Similar to Sear 3169 & 11609, C.236, RIC 308 & 390; Tripolis mint. Aurelian made the painful decision to abandon Dacia (see Trajan) in 271 AD and then attacked Zenobia & Valabathus in Palmyra in 272 AD. He also took the Gallic Empire by defeating Tetricus. He was killed while preparing to invade Sassanian territory

Description: Often refered to as Maximinus Thrax because he was born in Thracia in northern Greece. Reign was from 235 - 238 A.D., he was an effective soldier through the ranks, MAXIMINVS PIVS AVF GERM on the obverse. Reverse: Maximinus is standing between two military standards; PM TRP III COS PP. Weight is 2.6 g and it's in XF condition, VM# 7, C.64,RIC IV.2# 5.

Description: Emperor Gallienus, 253 - 268 A.D. with GERMANICVS MAX(IMVS) V, which relates to fact that the triumphal, "Germanicus Maximus," had been held for the 5th time. Antoninianus with a nice reverse that features a well appointed trophy with two German captives, bound, at the base. OB: GALLIENVS PF AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust left, holds spear and shield, Sear 2861, RIC V-1 18, C. 308, Lugdunum mint. The German Victories of Gallienus: (David Van Meter); From ca. 254 - 259 AD., Gallienus waged at least five successful campaigns against the Germanic Tribes along both the Rhine and Danube frontiers. The exact sequence and location of these victories is unknown but historian do know that in 254 there were battles with the Marcomanni in Pannonia and Northern Italy. There were major battles along the Rhine in 255 - 256 AD. Gallienus then defeated the Carpi in Dacia in 257. In 259 Gallienus stemmed an invasion of Italy by the Alemanni at Milan. Van Meter says the MAX V refers to a triumph held after the Alemanni were defeated at Milan.

Description: Gordian was the first to strike the reverse design of Moesia standing between a Bull and Lion (some with variations). The city of Viminacium, established in 239 A.D. became a very large city in Moesia Superior as the years went on. Extensive excavations are now underway with impressive results and a long way to go. OB: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG; "Emperor Marcus Julius Philippus Augustus" Rx: PMS C-OL VIM // AN V; Moesia standing from the front facing left, both hands extended above an bull to the left turned to the right and a lion to the right turned to the left. Legend means: 'Province Mœsia Superior Colonia Viminacium // Anno septimus', (Colony of Viminacium province of Upper Moesia // Year 5). Viminacium was founded by Gordian III in 239 or 240 (Year I). On the reverse, the Province or Tyche of the city is placed between the emblems of the Legions VII (Bull) and IV (Lion). Philip was born in Bostra in Trachonitis, province of Arabia, hence the nickname of the emperor. He is appointed prefect of the Praetorium after the death of Timésithée, the father-in-law of Gordian III, in 243. Philip makes or lets Gordian murder early in 244 and then hastens to conclude an infamous peace with the Sassanids. He pays them a tribute of 500,000 deniers. He named his son Philip Caesar in 244 and his wife Otacilia Severa augusta. In 247, Philip raises his son to augustat. He led a brilliant campaign against the Quades and Carpi who had invaded Dacia. The great event of Philip's reign is the commemoration of the millennium of Rome which begins on April 21, 247. Several usurpers, including Jotapian and Pacatian, proclaim themselves august at the end of the reign. Philippe charges Decius, commander of the Pannonian legions, to restore order on the Danube. The troops, against his will, proclaim Decius Augustus in June or July 249. Philip died fighting the troops of Decius in September 249. AE 29 (mm) Sestertius; struck ~ 245 A.D.

Description: A very nice example of a Antoninianus (double denarius) usually found in crudely struck condition. I have another Victoria Germania issue here in the Museum of a different type an on a bronze flan. Van Meter states this type celebrates the victory over the Carpi tribe in Dacia in 257 A.D. RSC IV #1173 type w/ dif. Ob. legend; RIC 252. Roman Imp Coins (van Meter) RIC 323 Obverse: "IMP GALLIENVS AVG", radiate bust cuirassed r. RX: "VICTORIA GERMAN", Victory standing r. , holding palm, presenting wreath to Gallienus, in military dress, standing l. holding globe and sceptre (or spear). Nice strike and large silver planchet. 3.53 g. & 23 mm.

Description: Here's a very nice 'LUDI SAECULARES' Sestertius issued for Otacilia Severa, Augusta (244-249 A.D). Draped bust right, wearing stephane. Issued under husband, Philip I ("The Arab"), for the Saecular Games in conjunction with 1000th Year of Rome. The events and celebration occurred in 248 A.D. In my attempt to assemble a representative group of all the coins issued during the Saecular Games (Millennial), I had to acquire all of the animal coins issued under Philip I, his wife and son included. I looked at many versions of the Hippo reverse and this is one of the best and most representative of this scarce type. Many of the engravers had never seen a hippo and missed several features that made many versions confusing. One looked like a bear with claws on it's paws. Truth is there may actually be a bear reverse type that has yet to be described for the series. OB: MARCIA OTACIL SEVERA AVG. ; Rx: SAECVLARES AVGG. Choice VF, 27 mm at 13.78 g. Description: Saloninus was given the rank of Caesar upon the death of his older brother Valerian II. He was sent to the German frontier in 260 A.D. (date of this coin) where he quarreled with Postumus over the disposition of some booty taken from the Germans. When Valerian was captured, Postumus seized the opportunity to have himself declared emperor by the troops. Thereafter he invaded Cologne where Saloninus had his headquarters. In response the garrison elevated Saloninus to the rank of Augustus. Shortly the garrison surrendered and Saloninus was put to death by Postumus. OB: SALON VALERIANVS HOB CAES; radiate and draped bust, r. ; RX; SPES PVBLICA, Spes presenting flower to Saloninus with star in field above. RIC 127, 36; C95. Sharp XF, billon silver. Scarce type!

Description: Salonina as Augusta (254-268 AD), wife of Gallienus. Her son was Saloninus who was murdered, along with his mother, to begin the Secessionist Gallic Empire haeded by Postumus. Well struck, especially on the reverse, in a decent looking silver. OB: SALONINA AVG, draped bust on crescent facing right. Rx: VESTA, figure seated l. holding sceptre and patera. XF, 2.65 g., 20mm. Description: The wife of Gallienus (243 AD), she was awarded the title Augusta in 254. OB: Diademed and draped bust facing r. on a prominent crescent; SALONINA AVG. Rx: VENVS AVG; Venus standing l. holding helmet and spear with shield beside her; XXV in ex. 3.22 g.; 20.68mm - toned base silver antoninianus in VF+; Asian mint, struck in 267 A.D. RIC 86, C113, She was murdered upon the defeat of Gallienus and held the laurel for a short while. Her and her son met their demise in 268 A.D. She and her son are associated with the beginnings of the Gallic Empire.

Description: Philip I, "The Arab", antoninianus of Antioch mint. "SAECVLVM NOVVM", New Saeculum celebrates the 1000th Anniversary of Rome and the new millennium. OB: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG; Rx: SAECVLVM NOVVM; Hexastyle temple of Roma Aeterna w/ 6 columns and a seated figure of Roma Aeterna. Coin is EF and very clear in all it's details and very scarce as such. 3.55 g at ~23mm. RIC 86b R-2, SR-8963v, sim. to C198 & S2474. Rosenblum 43a, Lot #132. The reverse depicts the double temple of Venus and Roma, designed by Hadrian, the largest and most splendid temple in Rome, finished by Antoninus Pius sometime between 140 and 145. Damaged by fire in 307, the temple was restored "in magnificent manner" by Maxentius (Aurelius Victor, De Caesaribus, XL). When Constantius visited Rome fifty years later, the so-called Temple of the City was one of the sights that he most admired (Ammianus, History, XVI.10.14). In 625, Pope Honorius received a special dispensation from Heraclius to strip the gilded bronze roof tiles for the repair of St. Peter's. During a twelve-day visit to Rome in 663, Constans II stripped it of its remaining bronze ornaments. It was damaged by an earthquake in 847. Later a church was built in the ruins. Description: Philip I - "The Arab", also considered to be the first Christian Emperor. 1000 Anniversary of Rome and the Saecular Games. Many of the coins struck to celebrate these events of 248 A.D. depict the animals gathered by Gordian III for his anticipated celebration of Persian victory. These animals were then used as part of the Saecular Games. Others, including the she-wolf/Romulus & Remus theme celebrate the founding of Rome in 753 B.C. OB: IMP PHILIPPVS AVG; Rx: SAECVLARES AVGG, She-wolf sucking Romulus & Remus, stand left [a right standing version was also struck]. "II" in exergue represents the 2nd officina or mint in Rome out of the five that Philip established. Not sure its a shield (bow?) and there's a staff as well. There may be something standing in the background. Any help on attribution is appreciated. Please use comments below.

Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus (218-268 A.D.) ruled the Roman Empire as co-emperor with his father Valerian from 253 to 260, and then as the sole Roman Emperor from 260 to 268. He took control of the empire at a time when it was undergoing great crisis. His record in dealing with those crises is mixed, as he won a number of military victories but was unable to keep much of his realm from slipping away. Gallienus was a bit of a playboy, regularly dressed in red or purple and gold robes, liked to wear a crown and besides having garish taste in clothes - was an aficionado of wine, women and song while the empire was splitting in three pieces, the Gallic in the West and the Palmyrene in the East. Nonetheless, he was supposed to have inspired a Renaissance of sorts and his "Zoo series" coinage is part of that accomplishment.
