Description: Qing Dynasty machine struck coin of Emperor De Zong (1875 - 1908). This example from Guangzhou in Guangdong Province is 24 mm and 2.75 g, therefore struck from 1895 - 1899. 7 Fen weight rather than 8 Fen. Hartill# 22.1335 (R16) VF

Guangxu trial strike ?

Description: Sold to me as a trial strike of Guangxu (1875 - 1908). If this is an authentic example then it's particularly unusual because of the size. It is larger than the 'normal' range of one cash milled pieces. The reverse is blank so there is no indication of a provincial mint, and it's oddly struck with no indication of an engraved reverse die. The obverse shows faint circular grooves in the fields. Diameter is 27 mm and the weight is 3.03 grams. Any opinions on this item would be appreciated. Description: Emperor De Zong (1875-1908) Guang Xu Tong Bao 1 cash machine struck coin 1890-95 Diam: 24.0mm, 2.9g Hartill 22.1335 While it does not show up too well on the scan, there is a striking error on the reverse. An oval or circlar depressed ring surrounds the central hole. I am unsure if this is significant or not, but it does separate this coin from the common herd.

Guangxu, Struck 1888 x2

Description: Zhili (or Chili) Province, Tianjin mint (Beiyang Asenal) during the Guangxu period. Emperor De Zong (1875-1908). This interesting series transitions the ancient casting method and modern milled & struck coinage while retaining the sq. hole. The mint cast & struck this same design simultaneously. A very interesting, first hand description of the process, and comparison with the casting methed can be read in "Qing Cash" by David Hartill; p.244-246. These are Type 1.2 as classified in QC (27.116). There seems to be some variablility in the alloy. Chinese sources described the ratio as 7 parts copper & 3 parts zinc. KM lists these as 'brass'. Here we have an example that is reddish (23mm; 3.5 gm); another looks brass (23 mm; 3 gm). No Date (~1888). OB: Guangxu Tong bao; RX: Boo jiyen. HQ #27.116, HC# 22.1461; Hsu#410.2
