Description: Emperor Hui Song (1101-25) Chong Ning Yuan Bao bronze 1 cash Slender Gold Script Diam: 22.7mm Weight: 3.5g The only listing of Chong Ning Yuan Bao 1 cash I can find is for coins in Li script. The calligraphy on this coin is crude. I suspect a modern fantasy.

Prince of Lu - FAKE

Description: Authorities have decided that this very rare variety is known BUT this example is a FAKE. The 'fabric' is wrong and and the color indicates it's copper rather than bronze. Da Ming tong bao (t,b,r,l), 'Currency of the Great Ming' is on the obverse rather than a period title. The Prince of Lu operated in southern China after the fall of Peking to Li Zicheng in 1644. With the fall of the Prince of Fu to the Manchus in 1645 the Prince of Lu was asked to assume power by Ming loyalists but he did not assume the title of an emperor. Rather the title "Administrator of the Kingdom" was used. The Da Ming series are some of the scarcer of the Ming Rebel coins because they were probably only cast between July 1645 and January 1646. The reverse indicates 'Jiao' (mint name?) at the top and is not documented in any common reference. Further information and opinions are requested. Diameter is ~24.7 mm and weight is 3.78 grams.

Description: Taiping Rebellion Tai Ping Tian Guo 5 Cash cast 1856-60 Rev: Sheng Bao above & below Diam: 32.5mm, 7.9g Hartill 23.7 A bit on the small size compared with Hartill's illustration. Calligraphy not too bad on Obverse, reverse a bit blurry. You don't get a $150+ coin for 99cents, but it fills a gap in the collection for now.

Description: Emperor Sheng Zu (1662-1722) Kang Xi Tong Bao Rev: Tian Xi Tai Ping Diam: 41.6mm, 32.6g Hartill mentions coins of this type being issued with the period titles Qianlong. Jiaqing, Daoguang, Xianfeng and Tongzhi, but NOT Kangxi. The item is well produced, but the calligraphy s eems not quite right. The Xi is printed type. The Tong is unusual for Kang Xi coins, and the Bao is indeterminate. Date uncertain - could be 19th or 20th century. Comments please!

Unidentified Fake/Fantasy

Description: The coin in the scan has the legend Xian ???? Zhong Bao. i cannot decipher the second (bottom) character. Reverse is plain Diam:33.8, 12.5g Casting quality is very poor. The coin came covered in a black tarry gunk which was surprisingly easy to remove using a fairly powerful household cleaner. I can't understand why anyone bothering to make a fake would do such a lousy job. There is of course the possibility that it is a crude Annamese or Indonesian copy of a Qing 10-cash coin.

Description: Replica of a lead coin tally issued in the Lin An Prefecture 1260-64 Obv; Lin An Fu Xing Yong ([For] Lin An Prefecture use) Rev: Zhun Yi Shi Wen Sheng (Equal to 10 cash reduced) Length 44.5mm, 7.5g (the real thing being lead might be heavier) Hartill 17.900 An accurate copy with a nice grey patina. It originally had some soil encrustation on it as well, but this soon fell off. I keep this in my collection as I will probably never see the real thing, and even if I did, I would be unable to afford it. Hartill gives it a rarity rating of 2 ($2000)

The other characters are fairly crude imitations. No attempt has been made to make this fake look ancient. Look in Archaic: Cowries, Spades & Knives for the real thing.

Description: Emperor Mu Zong (1862-74) Tong Zhi Tong Bao 1 cash Rev: Boo Su (Suzhou, Jiangsu) Diam: 25.1mm 4.4g This is an obvious fake. It is larger than the normal coins of this type (typically 21-23mm) and the calligraphy is incorrect. The Boo character on the reverse is the most glaring giveaway. The closed head Tong is also wrong.

Description: Emperor Wen Zong (1851-61) Xian Feng Tong Bao 5 cash (Brass) Rev: Boo De (Chengde, Zhili), Dang Wu (value 5) Diam 27.9mm, 7.9g Hartill lists an iron 5-cash Boo De - H22.1059, cast 1855, but nowhere can I find reference to a brass coin. Calligraphy looks correct,and size & weight are ball-park. Has anyone come across a similar coin or must I write this off as a fake?

QIAN LONG TONG BAO 10 CASH

Description: Emperor Gao Zong (1736-95) Qian Long Tong Bao 10 cash Palace Coin. Rev Boo Ciowan (Board of Revenue, Beijing) Jen 713 Diam41.5-42.2mm, 30.3g These coins were supposedly issued on the Emperor's birthday to officials of the court. They were not intended for circulation. The coin is not listed in Hartill, and expert advice I have received indicates that this is a fairly recent fake, even though it matches Jen's listing in all respects. Jen is said to have listed several fakes in his book. One giveaway is that a coin of this period would normally have diagonal file marks, whereas this has concentric finishing marks (very faint). Still, it's an impressive piece.
