China 5 Y - Empress of China - 1986

Description: I have the OB/REV backwards. Coin depicts the Great Wall and The Ship "Empress of China". 75 k minted but they seem common to purchase. The Empress of China (AKA "Chinese Queen") was a three-masted, square-rigged sailing ship, initially built in 1783 for service as a privateer After the Treaty of Paris brought a formal end to the American Revolutionary War, the vessel was refitted for commercial purposes . It became the first American ship to sail from the newly independent United States to China, opening what is known today as the Old China Trade and transporting the first official representative of the American government to Canton. The first American merchant vessel to enter Chinese waters left New York harbor on Washington's birthday, February 22, 1784. The Empress returned to New York on May 11, 1785 after a round voyage of fourteen months and twenty-four days. The success of the voyage encouraged others to invest in further trading with China. The history is provided by Wikipedia and it also shows a photo of the ship taken in 1876!

Shanghai Mint - Soviet Yuan medal

Description: OK, Ok, it's not a coin! But it comes from the Shanghai mint as an issue celebrating the famous, and rare, Soviet Yuan issue of 1934. They chose to depict the outlined star variety, a particularly expensive issue to acquire now. They didn't respect it too highly though - it's only silver clad!

Description: China Peoples Republic. This coin depicting ancient Chinese coin production using bronze is part of a short series in Science & Technology. Listed as the earliest of the silver 3 Yuan series coins. Interesting and scarce at only 23k minted. The coin shows 3 stages of production including ore recovery, smelting, and pouring into moulds. Coins depicted are the bronze cowrie imitation, knife, shirt and ban liang.

Description: Anti-Communist Student Freedom Dollar. The following is the text quoted in the eBay sale of this type of c/s fundraising piece. This 1896 Mexico City 8 Reales [Cap & Ray] has several chopmarks on both sides. Obverse is in Chinese with presumably the same legend as the English reverse: 'CHINA FREEDOM DOLLAR - SUPPORT THE FEDERATION - SAVE THE STUDENTS' "After the Tian An Men Square massacre [1989] in Beijing an organization [B.C.S.S.A.; Berkeley Chinese Students and Scholars Association] was formed to assist Chinese exchange students who were stranded in the United States where they had been studying. One of the devices they used to raise money was to counterstamp a few hundred old Chinese Silver Dollars and other silver dollars that circulated in mainland China at the same time as the Chinese silver dragon dollars and sell them at a premium. The silver dollars that circulated in China as the dragon dollars were mostly U.S. trade dollars, British trade dollars, French Indo-China silver piastres, and Mexican 8 reales. These foreign coins that were accepted in China as good silver trade coinage were not as many as the dragon dollars so they are actually rarer. In the center of the counterstamp was an anti-Communist logo and circling that the name of the group. On one side of the coin the lettering was in Chinese and on the other side of the coin the lettering was in English. With only about 200 of these silver coins in existence, these are extremely rare, historically very interesting and it would be very difficult to find one of these coins today. The host coins used for these Anti-communist Student Freedom Dollars appear to be limited to British Trade dollars, French Indo-China Piastres, and Mexican Cap & Ray Pesos.

Description: Very scarce issue of the People's Republic of China. Rx: depicts a female representing Peace among doves. This example belongs to T.M. in Cologne Germany. Many sources, including KM, have erroneous information about this coin. KM lists it at 11.318 grams and .337 oz AGW. The COA (Cert. of Authenticity) stats. are shown below. Definite mintage figures are not certain, most sources say 1000 but I have found others that show 380. In either case this is a very scarce and desireable early issue.
