Description: This is a companion to the 1938 I also have posted here. That one has such an unusual color for the same CN (copper - nickel) piece that this one is. It also fits into my special series on National Folk Maidens and/or Ceres (Demeter) theme coins. 5 M struck for this year.

Czechoslovakia - 100 Korun 1949 - Mining

Description: An issue in commemoration the 700th Year of Jihlava Mining Privileges. Here the figure of a hooded miner emerges from a mine on a ladder, he carries an oil lamp. Designed by O. Spaniel. The city's German name, Iglau, is derived from the German word for hedgehog, Igel, hence the hedgehog on the coat of arms. According to legend, silver was mined in Iglau as early as 799. King Ottokar I established a mint, and Iglau was granted extensive privileges already during these early times. An old Slavic settlement upon a ford was moved to a nearby hill where the mining town was founded (ca. 1240) by king Wenceslaus I. In the Middle Ages the town was inhabited mostly by Germans (mostly from Northern Bavaria and Upper Saxony). Medieval mines surrounded by mining settlements were localized outside the walls of the medieval town (named Staré Hory). In the era of the Hussite Wars, Jihlava remained a Catholic stronghold and managed to resist a number of sieges. Later at Jihlava, on 5 July 1436, a treaty was made with the Hussites, whereby the emperor Sigismund was acknowledged king of Bohemia. A marble relief near the town marks the spot where Ferdinand I, in 1527, swore fidelity to the Bohemian estates. [Wikipedia]

Description: Czechoslovakia Socialist Republic celebrates the 100th Year since the birth of Vladimir I Ulyanov [Lenin 1870 -1970]. This year saw the reduction in size of the 50 Korun silver coin. Only 44k were minted in Unc. with 6.6k minted in proof, some (451) were later melted. Obverse is the socialist Lion. Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known by the alias Lenin (22 April 1870 – 21 January 1924), was a Russian communist revolutionary, politician and political theorist. He served as head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924 and of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1924. Under his administration, Russia and then the wider Soviet Union became a one-party communist state governed by the Russian Communist Party. Ideologically a Marxist, he developed political theories known as Leninism.

'PRAGA' and the date range appears on the obverse with 'Seinost' [medallist] below, Czech rampant lion with Cross of Lorraine shield. Celebrates the 1000th year of Prague and St. Wenceslaus. Medallic fantasy issue, struck to commemorate the 1000th Anniversary of the Killing of Wenceslaus I during 929 A.D. Diameter: ~ 22mm Weight: 1.52gm; material: Silver Obverse: Bohemian lion above medallist´s signature (SEINOST) within inner circle. Legend: "PRAGA 929 . 1929" Reverse: Central Cross, legend: "VENCIEZLIVVS" Wenceslaus is the subject of the popular Saint Stephen's Day (celebrated on December 26 in the West) Carol, "Good King Wenceslas". It was published by John Mason Neale in 1853, and may be a translation of a poem by Czech poet Václav Alois Svoboda. The usual American English spelling of Duke Wenceslas' name, Wenceslaus, is occasionally encountered in later textual variants of the carol, although it was not used by Neale in his version. Wenceslas is not to be confused with King Wenceslaus I of Bohemia (Wenceslaus I Premyslid), who lived more than three centuries later. An equestrian statue of Saint Wenceslaus and other patrons of Bohemia (St. Adalbert, St. Ludmila, St. Prokop and St. Agnes of Bohemia) is located on Wenceslaus Square in Prague. The statue is a popular meeting place in Prague. Demonstrations against the Communist regime were held there. His helmet and armour are on display inside Prague Castle.

Description: Centennial of the Birth of Otakar Spaniel (1881 - 1955) he was a design sculptor and artist of many coins of Czechoslovakia. I like his iconic designs and this is why he's here in the Museum along with a number of his coins. Sometimes his designs are only shown with 'OS' or O. Spaniel. Only 115 k of these Unc. coins were struck (5k proof); over 56k of both strikes were melted.

Czechoslovakia - 650th Anniv. of Kremina Mint

Description: Czechoslovakian Socialist Republic 50 Korun of the 650th Anniversary of the Kremnica Mint. Reverse design depicts five distinctive coins of the mint over its long history. Czech coins present their rampant lion design on the obverse but I usually have it presented as the reverse side, sorry. Over 22k of these Unc and proofs were melted, 93 k Uncs were struck, 7k proofs.

Description: 10 Anniversary of the Slovak Uprising. Proof in original cellophane that I did not feel like opening for the photo. Uncirculated issue was 250k while the proofs saw only 5k minted, the CZ Bank melted better than 65k of both types in 1999.

Description: 10 Anniversary of the Liberation from Germany following WWII. Sorry for the photo, this is a proof in original cellophane and I don't have the heart to remove it. Another great heart-felt design from the CZ. Only 5k were minted in proof and the CZ Bank melted 95.552k of these in 1999, UNK mintage was 300k. There is no telling how many proofs remain.

Description: A lovely minor coin of 25 Haleru, the reverse denomination side is particularly striking and that's why it's here. This is a two year type, the 1932 is very scarce and valuable in even mid-grades.
