Naturally each one has a unique membership number crudely stamped into onto the reverse. The famous Daniel Ching Collection sale catalog had one with #23853. The Duan "Comprehensive Catalog of Chinese Copper Coins" (the bible) shows one with #22249. This Membership Badge has the number #5622. The following note from the Scott Semans auction (Jun 1991) catalog of the Daniel Ching states: "This medal was published in the April 1959 issue of 'Wen Wu' (Cultural Relics) magazine. There is no record of a Shih Min county ever having existed anywhere in China. Apparently this was a renamed county under the control of a early communist soviet base, most likely Hunan Province." (ed. Personally I consider this note authoritative as many early party members were still living in 1959.) Duan, Hong Gang states the same thing on p. 10 & 11. A Baldwin catalog (Hong Kong auction #50, Apr 2011, Lot # 936) shows the one with chain & hanger. They have a different attribution: Shi Min County Farmers Society, Copper Members's Badge (1940's). A note states "Qin Shui County, Shanxi was renamed Shi Min County in commemoration of General Wu Shi Min of the 98th National Revolutionary Army, killed in the war against Japan in 1941" (ed. if so the county has reverted to its original name). However, an on-line source (generals.dk) shows him as a Nationalist Army General by inference of a flag and description as a Nationalist Army general who also fought against the communists. So it's not really plausible that Shi Min county was named after General Wu Shi-min or that he was honored by the Chinese Soviets on their membership badge. Earlier attributions site the fact that all of these Membership Badges are overstruck on Hunan 20 Cash pieces (Y 400.x; ND - 1919). The Province of Shansi, sited in the latest (Baldwin) attribution, is a long distance from Hunan, so the link there seems tenuous. Another interesting link are that most of the large star with hammer & sickle counterstamps shown here in the Moneta Museum are mostly struck on Hunan 20 Cash pieces just like the Communist Party Membership Badge. Here the upper arm of the '4' is curved over. The master Chinese reference (Duan; "The Comprehensive Catalog of Chinese Copper Coins") shows 3 major varieties, as does KM (not including the '60's Re-strike). KM also states that there are many varieties within these 3 major types. This is a corrected '4' but here the raised arm is curved over the vertical stroke. Duan's example curves over like this. Another feature here are denticles, which are not very common on original 1934 examples, but do exist. This is the rare variety with large, decorative stars (the rays have some irregular shapes rather than the common type with straight points). The obverse shows a globe with parts of China shown, there is a hammer & sickle superimposed. Note that Wenchou says that this is the Reverse side. In any case the characters on top mean "Unite, proletariat of the world"; the year '1934' is shown below. The KM reverse shows the value in the center as "One Yuan" circumscribed with the words "The Chinese Soviet Republic - Szechuan-Shensi". Made by the mint of this Soviet on the outskirts of Tongjiang city in Sichuan Province. It was issued by the Worker-Peasant Bank in December of 1933 and ciculated in that base-camp area. All examples I have examined (4) show the same minor details in the design and in die flaws. As this is a rare variety I believe that these were all struck with a single set of dies that were never re-tooled. The only rarer types are those with hollow or pentagram stars which I have never seen in hand. Please see another example in the Gallery at: http://www.moneta-coins.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=516&cat=630 Other references for this type is Wenchou #1094 & Kann 808a. The expedition consisted of the combined forces of the KMT and the Soviet Red Armies. It was a brief moment of a combined effort to rid northern China of the powerful War Lord forces dominating there. Before the expedition was over the KMT forces began purging the Communists. This caused a split that eventually progressed to Communist take-over the the Chinese mainland and the Nationalist/KMT population escaping to Formosa (Taiwan), the situation remains the same today. The reverse of this coin is most interesting. It seems to illustrate various symbols of sectors of the Chinese population in alliance to defeat the War Lords. Shown are a abacus, carbine rife, a slate with the symbol for 'north or northern' (looks like a lap-top computer, the 'screen' shows the symbol) and a hammer & sickle. Like most early Chinese renditions of the hammer it appears to be more like an axe. Obviously it must have been struck, or in the works, before the split. This coin is not in the Museum, it was sold at a Ponterio auction, Dec 2010, for $6000 +fees. It was established in November 1931 by future Communist Party of China leader Mao Zedong, General Zhu De and others, and it lasted until 1937. However, the details/style of this coin has been classified by experts as a very rare issue of the Chinese Soviets. The Soviets made copies of various Republic coins in order to purchase items outside of the Red Army Base Camps. Their soviet money was not accepted outside their camps due to the severe penalties and death for holding communist money. The dollars seem to be way more prevalent than any of the fractional denominations. Lots of luster on worn dies, probably should be graded higher. I'm placing this counterstamped or chopmarked coin in the "Soviets" area because in the early days of the expedition, Communist and KMT [Kuomintang] joined forces against various warlords in northern China. This took place between 1926 and 1928, but in 1927 a rift took place between these two and the KMT began purges in the Communist forces. If this piece is authentic I do not know when it might have been struck, it could have been after the split. With the history of the Soviet Red Chinese Army base camps striking 'Hammer & Sickle within Star' [Hunan Soviet, 1931) and "Soviet" counterstamps on Chinese Republican coins, these 'Northern Expedition' counterstamps may be part of that evolution. The host coin here is Chinese Republic 10 Cash of 1912. [KM Y#301] From what I have been able to determine the counterstamp is shown almost in the correct orientation leaving the obverse up-side-down in the photo. In Wade Giles this character [bei fa] means 'north or northern'. It varies slightly in that a stroke 'tail' is missing from the bottom left side of the character. This portion is small and may have been omitted due to stylistic or the practical aspects of creating such a large chopmarked counterstamp. -- In the meantime I've found this countermark shown in an article of the publication "CHOPMARK NEWS" by Colin Gullberg (see CCC Vol 22, issue 2, Dec 2018. The article by Cedric Cheung confirms this chopmark as meaning 'North' but does not get into a discussion of it, the most interesting section was on the "Soviet" variety of countermarks, a variety of which are shown here in the Moneta Museum. Please comment, I'm requesting more information on the C/S and the attribution of this to the Northern . See below for historical details. The host coin in this instance is a 1910 British Trade Dollar that had several chops before being powerfully overstruck on both sides. Obverse is in Chinese with presumably the same legend as the English reverse: 'CHINA FREEDOM DOLLAR - SUPPORT THE FEDERATION - SAVE THE STUDENTS' After the Tian An Men Square massacre in Beijing an organization was formed to assist Chinese exchange students who were stranded in the United States where they had been studying. One of the devices they used to raise money was to counterstamp a few hundred old Chinese Silver Dollars and other silver dollars that circulated in mainland China at the same time as the Chinese silver dragon dollars and sell them at a premium. The dollar sized silver that circulated in China at the same time as dragon dollars were mostly U.S. trade dollars, British trade dollars, French Indo-China silver piastres, and Mexican 8 reales. These foreign coins, that were accepted in China as good silver trade coinage, were not as prevalent as dragon dollars, so they are actually scarcer. In the center of the counterstamp was an anti-Communist logo and circling that the name of the group. On one side of the coin the lettering was in Chinese and on the other side of the coin the lettering was in English. With only about 200 of these silver coins in existence, these are quite scarce, and historically very interesting. In the mean time I have been able to plus up the museum with three of the four known host coin types (there may be more) with these counterstamps. I wanted to compare to other Star/Hammer/Sickle counterstamps I have acquired; see this site. I was shocked to learn that it required better than $350 to bring it home. The previous lot at the sale [lot #983] had a nicer host but a greater open crack or two. The lucky winner there was down better than $750. Part of the description seems to have come from this site but the juicy details about the Japanese collection of Chinese coins for melting was intrigueing, to say the least. RR and they're getting more expensive as they appear on the market. These may be the earliest efforts for coinage within the Red Army bases. Only the obverse for now, the Rx is almost worn flat. The Y 464.2 type is supposed to have a dot in the center of the first '0' in 200. I may see traces of it but, in addition to the heavy wear, there is a dimple there. Generally, the form of this coin is much more like Y464.2 with the plain rim and edge, appears like brass and this type is known to be overstruck on previous coins. Also, check out the rosette with rays above the 200, that's not supposed to be there. It's a beautiful and historical mess! [Please register and Comment below] A great article published in the CHOPMARK NEWS (ed. Colin Gullberg; vol.22, issue 2, Dec 2018) is a fine, and first article on chopmarked and countermarked Chinese coins in copper. The following is a excerpt on 'Countermarks: Coins of Revolution and Propaganda,' by Cedric Cheung [see original and full article or contact me]: Chopmarks and countermarks can appear very similar. However, we use the term countermark when it is chopped by a government entity with the intent to label the coin as legal tender within their borders as opposed to a chopmark which is made by a private business or person. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the ruling Nationalist (KMT) were not always mortal enemies, in fact they worked together at least twice before the CCP defeated the Nationalists in 1949.3 Five years after its inception in 1921, with the blessing of Sun Yat-sen, the CCP joined forces with the KMT forming the “First United Front” army to root out local warlords and unite China in the Northern Expedition. However, by 1927 the communists were viewed as a growing threat by the new Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek and were purged by the thousands and the CCP was outlawed. The communists fled the cities and reorganized in rural areas focusing their efforts to recruit peasant farmers. By 1929, numerous “soviets” (local areas in control of the communists) were established, mostly in the southern inland provinces of Kiangsi, Hepeh, Fukien, and Hunan and Shensi in the north. By 1934, the area the CCP controlled was so large that the KMT could no longer ignore this threat and launched an allout offensive. After suffering several military defeats, the communists had no choice but to retreat, resulting in the so called "Long March" to their rural stronghold in central northern China in Shaanxi province. The party once again reorganized into a rural based guerilla force and were successful in recruiting peasant farmers and recapturing more land. However, when Japan invaded China in 1937, the Nationalists and Communists had a common enemy that neither were able to defeat alone and so they made an uneasy alliance. After Japan was defeated in WW2 the country plunged into civil war with Mao Ze Dong’s CCP emerging victorious in 1949. For the purposes of studying the Communist coinage of this time, it is important to go back to the first National Conference of the Chinese Soviet Republic of 1931, where it became official policy to countermark existing coinage in all soviets for use as local money.[see Sanrock Part I, below] By this time, there were 231 counties spread out in over a dozen provinces with a population of 3 million under its control. Countermarking was done locally, accounting for the many varieties of Soviet countermarks. The most commonly found host coins are 20, 50, and 200 cash coins. It must be remembered that to be caught with Communist money, of any kind, meant severe penalty in Nationalist held territory. Two other examples are represented here in the Museum. The host coin is a Republic of China 10 Cash (Wen) with no date, listed as an early issue of the Republic (1912). The counterstamp is on the obverse at 10 o'clock. The only reference to these c/s coins were from the 'Money Company' coin auction of Sep. 1984 and a Gregory G. Brunk article in the Numismatics International "Bulletin" of Jul/Aug 2009. See my 20 Cash example which has two counterstamps. A great article published in the CHOPMARK NEWS (ed. This photo was sent to me by a Chinese coin dealer when I uploaded the Wa She Wong specimen seen on this site. He valued it (Dec 2010) at $240. Both show an unusual roughness on the back side of the counterstamp. The Wa She Wong example is a much better imprint and the back side is particularly rough, an effect I can not explain. While this example indicates a c/s punch that is much more worn, it also has clear differences and is not the same c/s punch. There are at least 2-3 different style "SOVIET" counter punches. Also, be sure to examine the the 'Soviet' c/s found on the authentic YSK silver dollar. Any ideas? Please comment below. These are known to be larger and this one is ~ 35.2 mm. Please compare this with the other SSS 500 Cash examples. I have 14 examples of these and probably 10 of them are Y512.1 - and other examples that conform to Y 512 & Y512.2 with another ambiguously leaning to Y 512. The dies were extremely crude and I have often thought the planchets were cast. If you've ever tried to attribute these then you know it can be tough. There are a few stand-out features (i.e. reversed '200) and then again there's this. With the many variations from those shown in any reference you just have to do the best you can and wait for further info. See the others, enlarge each one, keeping them in the que so that you can view them side-by-side. One of the big advantages over any other site. At the end of '08 I purchased this one from a dealer in Cheng Du, Szechuan for the most I ever had to pay for one of these crude 200's, $170.00, I find them fascinating! I usually don't discuss the price here unless it's the occasional auction snag. I mention it now because, with the rise of the Chinese economy, prices have risen quickly. An exact 'die match' exists in this coin from a Steve Album auction that will close on 15 Sep '22 at this: https://www.sarc.auction/SZECHUAN-SHENSI-SOVIET-AE-200-cash-1933-PCGS-graded-Fine-details_i46002483 Their description: SZECHUAN-SHENSI SOVIET: AE 200 cash, 1933, Y-510, CL-SWA.13, small "200"; solid hammer and sickle variety, environmental damage, PCGS graded Fine details. This coin, and the other even rarer one, KM2 (if you can imagine such!) were issued before they were forced to flee. They took coins and minting equipment when the March began but at the first river battle they had to lighten their loads and dump it all in the river. There is only one other coin in Chinese monetary history that bears the value (50 Cash), and date, in English. The '10' after 1931 might refer to the month of October. This example was obtained at the Baldwin Hong Kong auction #42 (30 Aug. '07), Lot #547 it brought $862. These coins are always crude and lightly struck, this example is far better than the current KM plate coin.
