Babenberg was a noble dynasty of Austrian margraves and dukes. Originally from Bamberg in the Duchy of Franconia (present-day Bavaria), the Babenbergs ruled the Imperial Margraviate of Austria from its creation in 976 AD until its elevation to a duchy in 1156, and from then until the extinction of the line in 1246, whereafter they were succeeded by the House of Habsburg. Arpad (845 - 907 AD) was the head of the confederation of the Hungarian tribes at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries. In a history involving the Byzantines and Bulgarians, the Hungarians were forced to leave for a new homeland across the Carpathian Mountains towards the Pannonian Plain. Arpad, a descendant of Attila, led his people to this new homeland in 895 - 896 AD, and thus began a millennium of people known as Hungarians as of 1896. This is an original strike and a one year type. This type has been re-struck several times in proof silver, with and w/o edge inscription. I've seen one of the original of these offered in a red fiber circular box with the inscription 'Milleniumi Koronaerum 1896' embossed on the lid. Another is this version with a different commemorative special issue round box in green cloth, with gold lettering. The box lid states "Milleniumi Koronaerem 1896." See my 'borrowed' photo of the red fiber box to see the bottom inscription. That photo and example is not from the Moneta Museum. The King depicted is Franz Joseph I wearing his famous crown. The coins' obverse inscription: ·AZ EZERÉVES MAGYARORSZÁG EMLÉKÉRE 1896·1 KORONA (To the memory of the millennium of Hungary 1896 1 crown) with K·B· under the King's shoulder. The edge lettering: ~*~ BIZALMAM AZ ŐSI ERÉNYBEN (Translation: MY FAITH LIES IN ANCIENT VIRTUES) Engraver: Filip Edmund Beck. 'K.B.' is the mintmark for the Kremnitz mint, alignment is medal. Naturally, it's celebrating the Millennium with various symbols including a prominent Y2K, a big scare for all computers which never materialized. The seated Liberty design was used in a series of coins from Liberia, not too well rendered in my opinion. These are not so common with only 2000 struck and they're an even ounce of pure silver. It was published by John Mason Neale in 1853, and may be a translation of a poem by Czech poet Václav Alois Svoboda. The usual American English spelling of Duke Wenceslas' name, Wenceslaus, is occasionally encountered in later textual variants of the carol, although it was not used by Neale in his version. Wenceslas is not to be confused with King Wenceslaus I of Bohemia (Wenceslaus I Premyslid), who lived more than three centuries later. An equestrian statue of Saint Wenceslaus and other patrons of Bohemia (St. Adalbert, St. Ludmila, St. Prokop and St. Agnes of Bohemia) is located on Wenceslaus Square in Prague. The statue is a popular meeting place in Prague. Demonstrations against the Communist regime were held there. His helmet and armour are on display inside Prague Castle. The Old Royal Observatory at Greenwich established a standardized system for time in only 1884. Before that almost every town in the world kept it's own time. With the expansion of communications (telegraph) and railways the need for a standardized system became imperative. The physical brass meridian line served until 1998. In preparation for the Millennium change an electronic one over the exact same place was established. The brass line was removed from the Royal Observatory and the metal used as the central line on this coin which is part of the official Greenwich Meridian logo of GM 2000! A full history of the Meridian, established at longitude 0.0, came printed with the boxed coin. These were struck by the Pobjoy mint which also struck the first Titanium coin for the Millennium issued of Gibraltar (also in this Museum). Another first is the 'latent image' (1999 > 2000) 25 Rupees issued by Seychelles. This visual effect on a Millennium coin can also be seen on a issue of Poland, an example of which can also be seen here in the Museum. The events and celebration occurred in 248 A.D. In my attempt to assemble a representative group of all the coins issued during the Saecular Games (Millennial), I had to acquire all of the animal coins issued under Philip I, his wife and son included. I looked at many versions of the Hippo reverse and this is one of the best and most representative of this scarce type. Many of the engravers had never seen a hippo and missed several features that made many versions confusing. One looked like a bear with claws on it's paws. Same obverse design (different die). The reverse represents the eagle & shield type found on the Liberty Seated Dollar (USA). The NCLT aspect is emphasized by the fact that one type is a $10 denomination and the same weight/fineness is also found on this $1 coin. Oh well, it's the tribute that counts! These 'coins' are 130% larger than the original and contain over 130% more silver than the original. The reverse eagle & shield style is most like the type that exists on a Liberty Seated Dollar with 'Heraldic' eagle. Here the eagle wings are set higher like the reverse of a Barber half dollar. I have yet to learn the mintage on this type and it's not listed in KM. This Millennium coin extraordinare changes date from 2000 to 2001 as you move it! Thus 3 photos to show the '4 sides' (the 4th side is the edge). Originally mintage figures were stated at 2000, unfortunately (for Moneta) the mintage has been increased to at least 200,000. The Liberty cap of old makes a reappearance. Also the current coat-of-arms harkens back to elements of the ACS token (sailing ship) and to the 1847/62/96 issues of setting sun and bird with message. Now a plow has been added. Banner below the flags states: "The Love of Liberty Brought Us Here". Mintage (at this time) is said to be 2,000, I suspect it is probably a lot higher. If so, that would make it quite a scarce 'Morgan"! Toned areas on the cameo regions are lighting effects & are not actually there. This would be considered a 'bullion' issue.

1 comment Moneta Mon, 02 Jan 2006 17:50:42 -0500 Iceland, Althing Millennial 2 Kronur http://www.moneta-coins.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=2701&title=iceland-2c-althing-millennial-2-kronur&cat=635

by: Moneta

Description: 1000 Year Althing Medallic Commemorative.
