Description: Too bad it's been cleaned, a surprise discovery since I don't really collect Canadian coins, but this seems to be a scarce variety with large leaves and small date. See the site below where detailed photos show the wider gap between 8 / 9 in the date. Size alone is difficult but the photos on the excellent site make it clear this is a variety Large Leaves and Small Date.

Description: These are Hard Times tokens that are a bit of a jumble. They're listed as a USA Hard Times token (Low #48; HT-204) but I believe they're struck for use in Canada as a BAS-CANADA token of Quebec. They were struck in Belleville, New Jersey by the "Belleville Boys" who are also credited with other HHT, particularly the ACS token for Liberia and a series of Brazilain counterfeits, etc. This crude piece reflects the quality of product of Belleville in 1837. Since I believe the ACS tokens of 'Liberia' (struck for fund raising in the USA) were actually struck by the US Mint in Philadelphia, this coin helps prove the point that they were incapable of striking the fine pieces of Liberia in 1833. Without proof, I still believe that, if they did strike Liberian tokens it was as counterfeits. DUSEAMAN BUTCHER is a botched attempt at creating a legend that was supposed to read D.U. SEAMAN - BUTCHER; perhaps a butcher in New York City. This is often categorized as a hard times token. Tobias D. Seaman ordered these as a business card, his main income was as a hotelier and as a butcher. After he rejected them the U was added to the die to create the name DUSEAMAN, the mule is the same weight as an American large cent. A sou was a halfpenny in French Canada (Quebec Province). Two sous (plural) made a penny. But a penny was not what we understand by a cent. Until 1867, Canada was a colony of Great Britain and it used the English monetary system in which a pound sterling was the principal monetary unit. Twenty shillings made a pound and twelve pence or pennies a shilling. Therefore, 240 pennies or 480 halfpennies equaled one pound sterling. [C. Faulkner]

Description: Research indicates this is the type of Bouquet Sou that was contract minted by the 'Belleville Boys' of Gibbs firm in Belleville NJ, USA. They are known for their production of Hard Times tokens. Gift from R.S. in CA - THX! Bas (Lower) Canada. Copper Sou Token (27mm) Belleville (New Jersey) mint. Struck 1837-8. AGRICULTURE & COMMERCE/ * BAS CANADA * TOKEN./ MONTREAL. UN SOU within wreath of oak leaves In Belleville, New Jersey, John Gibbs, who on a token known as Low 150, described himself as MANUFACTURER OF MEDALS AND TOKENS, was a senior partner of Gibbs, Gardner & Co. His business was located in a building on the same premises as Stevens, Thomas & Fuller, a company which produced dies and struck minor coins for Brazil, Liberia, Santo Domingo, and various private merchants. Stevens had earlier obtained his training in Birmingham, England. The coining facility became known as the Belleville Mint. Many different varieties associated with the Hard Times token series, including some bearing the evasive legend NOT ONE CENT, were made there. In addition, similarly-sized copper coins known as bouquet sous were made for circulation in Canada. The floral bouquet design was used in one instance as a reverse for a token issued by William Gibbs, father of John Gibbs, who proclaimed himself to be an AGRICULTURIST.

Description: Another variety. In the 1830’3 and 40’s in the Canadian British Colonies like Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Quebec) there was no circulating coinage. This was a great inconvenience to storekeepers and the public alike. In Lower Canada (Quebec), banks began issuing their own tokens that were used as coinage. There was the Banque du Peuple, the City Bank, the Quebec Bank and the Bank of Montreal all providing one half and one penny tokens. Most were struck in England dated from 1837 to 1845. In 1838, the Bank of Montreal replaced earlier issues with new tokens showing a corner or side view of the bank building. Apparently the bank manager felt the tokens were poorly made and the shipment was returned to England.
