Peru Tupac Amaru II 50 Soles - 1971

Description: 150th Anniversary of Independence. The coin also celebrates Tupac Amaru II who began the independence movement, which eventually lead to independence and was an inspiration to all of Latin America for independence from Spain. See the link below in order to get a history of these events and a numismatic legacy. This coin was not mentioned in the article, so I included her because the history is little known and important to South America. This one year type has a mintage of 100k. To commemorate the 150 years anniversary independence for the Republic of Peru, the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (Banco Central de Reserva del Perú or BCRP) issued a series commemorative coins in denominations of 5, 10 and 50 soles. These were minted at the national mint Casa Nacional de Moneda located in Lima and all would feature the portrait of Túpac Amaru, who was the last Sapa Inca (emperor) of the Neo-Inca state. The 50 soles was Túpac Amaru acceded to the monarchy in 1571, following the death of his predecessors, and was named Sapa Inca of the Neo-Inca state. The state was the last remaining stronghold of the great Incan Empire in Vilcabamba, Peru and saw the final years of the Spanish conquest, which ran for 40 years from 1532 to 1571. Description: From 1879 to 1884 Bolivia, Chile and Peru engaged in the War of The Pacific ("Saltpeter War") over control over huge piles of bird droppings (guano) which were mined to obtain nitrate used in gunpowder. Chile won, Bolivia became a land-locked nation, and Peru almost collapsed. During the war Peru issued special copper-nickel coins, which they called provisional money, in place of their usual silver coins. The coins were only minted in 1879 & 1880, but the 20 Centavos coin is much scarcer and only minted in 1879

Description: This coin is from the very short Provisional Coinage period (1879 - 1882) that featured Pesetas rather than Soles. This coin fits in nicely for the Peruvian "National Maiden" project.

Description: 400th Aniversary of the Lima Mint, shows an early issue of the mint with the two pillars motif. A full set of this commemorative series would be a nice set. The other two coins are a 50 & 100 Soles in .900 gold.
