Hungary - 100 Korona 1908

Description: Emperor Franz Joseph I; (18 Aug 1830 – 21 Nov.1916) he was Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, and the ruler of the other states of the Habsburg monarchy from 2 December 1848 until his death in 1916. In the early part of his reign, his realms and territories were referred to as the Austrian Empire, but were reconstituted as the dual monarchy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867. From 1 May 1850 to 24 Aug 1866, he was also president of the German Confederation. I'm not sure yet how you tell the difference between the originals and the 1974 restrikes. Numista shows the K.B. mintmark implying that's the original but doesn't show any of the past sales without the KB. The original 1908 has a mintage figure of 4,038 while the unmarked restrikes have a mintage of 475.859 K! That's a big difference but for past sales I'm not seeing that scarcity difference showing up in sales prices. Further research req. to determine how to tell the difference between the two strikes.

Hungary 1 Korona 1896 - Arpad Millennium

Description: This is the coin found in the original green cloth box, see the other photo here in the Moneta Museum. 1000 Years of Hungary depicting Arpad and his famous queen. Arpad (845 - 907 AD) was the head of the confederation of the Hungarian tribes at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries. In a history involving the Byzantines and Bulgarians, the Hungarians were forced to leave for a new homeland across the Carpathian Mountains towards the Pannonian Plain. Arpad, a descendant of Attila, led his people to this new homeland in 895 - 896 AD, and thus began a millennium of people known as Hungarians as of 1896. This is an original strike and a one year type. This type has been re-struck several times in proof silver, with and w/o edge inscription. I've seen one of the original of these offered in a red fiber circular box with the inscription 'Milleniumi Koronaerum 1896' embossed on the lid. Another is this version with a different commemorative special issue round box in green cloth, with gold lettering. The box lid states "Milleniumi Koronaerem 1896." See my 'borrowed' photo of the red fiber box to see the bottom inscription. That photo and example is not from the Moneta Museum. The King depicted is Franz Joseph I wearing his famous crown. The coins' obverse inscription: ·AZ EZERÉVES MAGYARORSZÁG EMLÉKÉRE 1896·1 KORONA (To the memory of the millennium of Hungary 1896 1 crown) with K·B· under the King's shoulder. The edge lettering: ~*~ BIZALMAM AZ ŐSI ERÉNYBEN (Translation: MY FAITH LIES IN ANCIENT VIRTUES) Engraver: Filip Edmund Beck. 'K.B.' is the mintmark for the Kremnitz mint, alignment is medal, 1 million were struck. These commemorative 1 year types are usually found circulated.

Description: Revolutionary war of Independence of 1848 - 1849 issue of 3 (Harom) Krajczar of the usual crude type. Minted in 1849 with NB mintmark (Nagybania, Transylvania), it is a one year type of Franz Joseph I.

Hungarian Revolution - Egy (1) Krajczar

Description: Hungarian War of Independence from Austria. Brown with a hint of red, this example of the one Krajczar (Egy) of 1848, is virtually uncirculated. Mintages for this entire series are unlisted in the texts I have, any help would be appreciated. These are available so the mintage was probably substantial. In KM under the Harom Krajczar they mention varieties overstruck w/ a figure of Madonna. While not noted for the Egy K. this one clearly shows the outline of a crown & shield on the reverse, similar to the one on the obverse. I believe this is called a 'struck through' error. Also, this one does not have a mintmark of 'NB' so it is the much more common one from Kremnitz.

Description: Part of the Revolutions in Europe of 1848 - 1849 this turned out to be a War of Independence from Austria. This silver coin is the highest denomination minted during this two year independence movement. Each denomination was only struck during one year.
