Description: The islands were settled by Greeks. It was under Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, French, and British rile in its history. After the Napoleonic Wars, ownership was ceded to Britain who controlled the islands until 1862 when it was ceded to Greece. Early modern coinage was issued in 1801 by a short-lived republic. Britain issued coins from 1819 to 1862. This is a thirty lepta coin minted in 1857.

Description: Crete was home to the ancient Minoan culture. It is believed that the culture was destroyed by a massive earthquake and tidal wave in Thera on the island of Santorini about 1600 BC. Crete was ruled by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and finally by the Ottomans. Numerous uprisings against the Ottomans finally was solved in 1897 by the western powers who established a Cretan State. Prince George of Greece was selected to lead the new State. In 1913 it was transferred to Greece. This is one of the coins issued for the State, a 5 Drachma coin dated 1901.

Description: A gorgeous coin in pristine condition, w/ 30k struck. Also available in a 50 D denomination (100k minted). The 100 Drach. was also minted in .900 gold (10 or 20 k minted). The 1967 Revolution nearly resulted in a communist take-over, instead a military coup took power for seven years. Their rule lasted until 1974. On 21 April 1967, just weeks before the scheduled elections, a group of right-wing army officers led by Brigadier General Stylianos Pattakos and Colonels George Papadopoulos and Nikolaos Makarezos seized power in a coup d'etat. The colonels preferred to call the coup a "revolution to save the nation". Their official justification was that a "communist conspiracy" had infiltrated Greece's bureaucracy, academia, press, and military, to such an extent that drastic action was needed to protect the country from communist takeover. Thus, the defining characteristic of the Junta was its staunch anti-communism. (wikipedia)

Description: I believe this a PATTERN or TRIAL strike by CH Pillet, two other patterns here in the Museum show his name engraved, all three were acquired at the same time/source. Very similar design as the business strike but note"925 (omega zeta and maybe, iota iota" on the obverse rim. I'm pretty sure it is not struck in Sterling silver. Beautiful,...here the lighting flattened the surfaces, better in hand w/proof-like surfaces and light iridescence overall. While the other two are over weight this one is under weight. The original is struck in .500 silver (see my example here in Greece). Obverse is based on a classical Greek coin of Demeter [ CERES in the Roman pantheon]. The engraver for this series of three is Charles Pillet, he was a French sculptor and engraver. Born in Paris, Pillet was a pupil of Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu and Jules-Clement Chaplain. He won the first Grand Prix de Rome engraving medals 1890. He became a member of the Society des Artistes Francais in 1898. The Louvre preserves a letter he wrote to Eugene Delacroix.

Description: The SCWC [KM] shows these were minted in London and Brussels, with the Brussels mint being valued at over twice the London mint. The note states; London "in second set of berries on the left only one berry will have a dot on it" and for the Brussels mint "Two berries will have dots". That's good but the description of "second set of berries" will probably not get you there because by my count it's NOT the second set of berries. Starting the count from where? It's the second set of three berries from the top of the left sprig. Another, less important note, they are not dots but dimples. If you search 'Google Images' for this coin you'll see depictions distinguishing the two mints. I've seen these in a Heritage auction, slabbed MS 65 go for over $200. There's no real wear on this but fields are disturbed enough to be called a AU.

Description: Where to put it? Macedonia? - No Gots! Coin on Coin project or Millennium project? I know - Greece and the projects. I'm not sure why Macedonia decided to depict the 40 Nummia ['M'], as far as I know it has nothing to do with the Millennium. The Byzantine coin depicted on the obverse is from Justinian I - The Great, and is regnally dated as '5' and is minted in NIKO [Nicomedia]. The reverse shows an ornamental cross of the byzantine or Greek orthodox variety. You can see an orginal in the Moneta Museum.

Description: Kingdom issue soon after gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire and before the monarchy was established. Here is a scarce coin from the independence period of 1828-31. The phoenix represents the re-birth of Greece and independence from the Ottoman Empire (Turks). This is the one year type with the phoenix in a pearl circle (actually little heart shapes). The series was struck by the liberation hero, and first governor Ioannis Antonios Kapodistrias. His name appears on the reverse. Very Scarce. It appears that the 1830 series is somewhat distinctive. Many are more crude with the planchets exhibiting irregularities. This one was obtained from Stacks Bowers auction #159 in Baltimore (Lot# 10468, Apr. 2011). Sale price was nearly $259 w/fees. This VF example is 15.45 grams and ~ 31mm. Derived from Greek mythology, the national bird of Greece is the legendary phoenix, an immortal creature with the ability to rise from its own ashes. The regenerative nature of the phoenix has historical relevance in Greece, first as an emblem of the revolution in 1821 and later as the name of the country’s first currency. Often associated with life after death, the phoenix is often paralleled to the country’s ability to rise from its financial crisis.

Description: Thankfully, Greece decided to go with a more classical look for their 1930 series. This piece depicts the goddess Athena in her traditional helmet. Another one-year type and scarce in uncirculated condition. Description: This is one of the wonderful neo-classical coin designs that Moneta strives to present in the Gallery. This Greek Republic issue, and another (Demeter, 10 Drachmai, see 'Next Image) of 1930, are tributes to classical Greek designs. In this case the coin is a Kingdom of Macedon, Antigonos Doson (229-221 BC) AR Tetradrachm, from the mint of Amphipolis, c. 227-225 BC. Here the reverse shows the bearded god Poseidon and the obverse is a type common to the Greeks showing the prow of a galley, a Greek war ship (images reversed here). This is a one-year type of the 2nd Republic is scarce this nice.

Description: This is one of the wonderful neo-classical coin designs that Moneta strives to present in the Gallery. This Greek Republic [ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ ] issue and another (Poseidon, 20 Dr) in this period are re-creations of classical Greek designs. In this case the attribution of the ancient Greek coin is to a stater of Delphi (Phokis) from 336 B.C. These were issued by the Amphiktyonic council to help defray the cost of the new Temple of Apollo. Reverse shows a veiled goddess Demeter [ ΔΗΜΗΤΗΡ, under the Roman pantheon she is Ceres ] and the obverse is a type common to the Greek colony (in Italy) of Metapontum (& others in Italy) showing a ear of wheat. Italy used this motif in their neo-classical designs of the early 20th Century, see modern Italy, 5 Centesimi 1919 - 1937. Struck in London, this coin has two engravers, Percy Metcalfe for the reverse and Michael Axelos for the obverse (shown here reversed). This is a one-year type and scarce this nice. A BU slabbed example sold for $700 in 2011.
