Germany - Opel Factory w/ A. Hitler Portrait 1933

Description: Zach P. Collection. 1 May 1933 "Day of the German Workers" medal. This type is listed in "Medallic Portraits of Adolf Hitler" by R.W. Colbert and William D. Hyder as C-40, however, there it's listed as made in copper. Most coins, medals and tokens of the period are not made of copper, a critical industrial metal at the time. It's described without a photo so it may be an error or it may have been struck in white metal too. Here the medal appears to be about 36 mm in diameter. The description from the reference above is: C-40; Obverse: Bust of Hitler facing left. The inscription reads, "ADOLF HITLER / DER FUHRER AUS DER NOT" or "Adolf Hitler, the leader out of the hardship (want)." Reverse: The Opel factory is portrayed, surrounded by the inscription, "N.S.B.O. OPELWERKE / 1.MAI.1933 TAG DER DEUTSCHEN ARBEIT ':'" or "Organization of National Socialist Industrial Cells (Nationalsozialistische Betriebszellenorganisation) - Opel Factory; May 1, 1933 - Day of the German Worker." Description: Denomination and date within German Cross. Lettering: 3, КОПѢЙКИ, 1916; [Translation: 3 Kopecks] RX: The legend "Region of the commander-in-chief - East" appears between some oak leaves. Lettering: GEBIET, DES, OBERBEFEHLSHABERS, OST, A Translation: Region of the commander-in-chief - East This coin was issued during the First World War by the German army in order to be used in Estonia, Poland and North-West Russia. These regions were, in those days, occupied by Germany. NOTE: these have been counterfeited, all have a rough edge, here the edge is very smooth. Denominations of 1 & 2 Kopecks also circulated in the eastern front. While the photo might indicated the iron has been cleaned, as so many are, the actual surface is pristine iron with a couple of (well below average) rust spots.

Engraver: Karl Goetz Entering passenger service with the Cunard Line in 1907, the Lusitania continued the line’s heavily-traveled service between Liverpool and New York City. After the outbreak of World War I, however, relations between Great Britain and Germany diminished, as the two became enemies within the conflict. This lead to Germany’s declaration of submarine warfare upon the British Isles and a ‘no-sail zone’ for any vessel flying the British flag. On 7 May 1915, the Lusitania was identified by a German U-Boat, torpedoed, and sank in 18 minutes, killing over 60% of the passengers. Description: I acquired this in Germany in the mid-1960's although I cannot attribute this to to a particular mint but I highly suspect it was struck by the German Federal mint (D) in Munich. There appears to be a series of these pure silver pieces but they must have had a really low mintage because you do not see these come up for sale very often.

Description: Zeppelin der Schöpfer (creator), Eckener der Führer (the leader), Durr der Erbauer (the builder). Proofs exist, this struck as uncirculated. The World depiction on the back shows some stops on the flight, Friederickshaven, Germany; Lakehurst, NJ, Los Angles, CA; Tokyo, Japan.

Description: An example of WWI emergency money for the Duchy of Brunswick, Lower Saxony a year or more after the end of the First World War. I like the rendition of the horse and the fact that most of the very light rust is on the 10 Pfg. side. Appears uncleaned and shinier than the photo would indicate. 'Herzogtum' means duchy in German.

Description: Here's a nice example of a region, now known as the Czech Republic, that was known as Bohemia and Moravia during World War II while under the protection of Nazi Germany. This area, where many German speaking people lived, became the catalyst for alarm when Third Reich (Nazi) Germany decided their need for "lebensraum" [living space] meant they should occupy the western section of Czechoslovakia to protect the Germans living there. Another aspect of this was the Nazification of Austria and the occupation of Poland, all preliminary to the beginning of WWII. In a center there is element of coat of arms of The Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (coat of arms of Czech): crowned lion rampant to the left. Semicircular inscriptions – in German language: BÖHMEN UND MÄHREN (above) and on Czech: ČECHY A MORAVA. Lettering: BÖHMEN UND MÄHREN, ČECHY A MORAVA Translation: Bohemia and Moravia (German and Czech); OB. Engraver: Jaroslav Eder. Rx: Engraver: Otakar Španiel; Minted in Lysá nad Labem in a metal furniture factory. Minted from 1941 to 1944 with 104.8 M minted over the four years of production.

Description: Site of the historically famous and important Protestant Reformation of Martin Luther, where he nailed the 95 thesis demands to the church door. I deed to do some research to determine if the church depicted here is the one in question. There's a bit of an unusual denomination here: KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE, that's 20 characters which would literally translate as Small Change Emergency [Pfennigs]. Here the zinc is a fuzzy natural tone.

Description: I obtained another of these. It has less rust but is not in any better condition really. I don't know if there was a famous Dog Fight Ace from the Duren area or not. These appear to have been 'aluminized' to provide a nicer finish. Most examples show no remaining finish.

Description: Here is the Stadt Duren version of the helmeted soldier, here with an "SD" in the field. A similar coin, was issued for Weissenfels (50 Pfennig 1918, see at this http://www.moneta-coins.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=2259&title=weissenfelswwi-soldier-50-pfg-&cat=881 ). The major difference in the portrait is that here the metal stud is missing, I believe all German WWI helmets had this stud on both sides of the helmet.

Description: GERMANY: Weimar Republic, AR gilt medal (19.84g), 1932, Hyder & Colbert-D23, 35mm gilt silver election donation medal by the NSDAP, hands raised all around a large swastika // (Swastika) / REICHSTAGS- / WAHL / 1932 / KAMPF-SCHATZ / SPENDE in center with N.S.D.A.P KAPITULIEREN-NIEMALS! around, toned reverse, lightly cleaned, "990" on edge, nearly XF, Rare. Reichstag Vote of 6 Nov. 1932 Donation medal. This was the last free election for Germany until 1949, Hitler gained the Chancellor of Germany position in Jan. 1933. While the Nazi Party (N.S.D.A.P.) lost votes in this election, by 13 percentage points they were the majority party of Germany over the SDP Party. Therefore it heightened the struggle the Nazis had with the various communist parties at the time. Thus, this last vote was instrumental in setting up Hitler for eventual dictatorship. "KAPITULIEREN-NIEMALS!" means 'Never Capitulate!' or 'Never Surrender!' The "KAMPF~SCHATZ SPENDE" Google translates as 'FIGHT TREASURE / DONATION' the true meaning might be 'Campaign Treasury Donation.' This medal has a bold distinctive design and was given to those who contributed significant funds towards the election campaign.

Description: Another in the series of WWI worker scenes I think are interesting. Here this unusual design depicts a cogwheel, hammer and engineers' compass on a sky with clouds. In exergue are the words "Arbeit Bringt Brot" which means 'Work Provides Bread' - similar to the famous phrase above WWII prison/extermination camp entrances "Arbeit Macht Frei" or 'Work Will Set You Free.' Scarcer variety w/4 sun beams over highest cloud and dashed beam at hammer handle.

Description: Another in the series of Frankenthal near the Rhine river in the Pfalz region. This one shows an interesting scene of farm women cutting wheat. Fifty pfennig Kriegsgeld seems to be a scarcer one to obtain, especially in nice condition, which this one isn't. It's also a stretch to fit this in the Ceres group, but I'll do it anyway.

Description: This iron example has survived well in its natural tone, without much rust and never cleaned. Value 10 (pfennig, unstated) "Furs Vaterland" stands for 'For the Fatherland.' Here the narrative scene features a female factory worker in a munitions plant. She's managing some heavy-weight cannon shells with large, strong hands. Frankenthal is in the Pfalz, near the Rhine River.
