The rise of the Hapsburgs, beginning around 1246, carried the Babenberg line into the 20th century. Babenberg was a noble dynasty of Austrian margraves and dukes. Originally from Bamberg in the Duchy of Franconia (present-day Bavaria), the Babenbergs ruled the Imperial Margraviate of Austria from its creation in 976 AD until its elevation to a duchy in 1156, and from then until the extinction of the line in 1246, whereafter they were succeeded by the House of Habsburg. [Wikipedia] On the obverse, trailing from the broken chain of the Hammer and Sickle, is the word COVFAL cleverly inserted, this is the name of the engraver. G. Simon is the engraver of the galloping knight reverse. Those interested in symbology, and national emblems will be interested in the evolution of the Eagle, both single and double headed, and the instruments carried in his talons. The Imperial Austrian Empire, traditionally carried a sword and orb. With the changes wrought by WWI, and by the early 1920's, these implements were replaced with a Hammer and Sickle (no chains). Obviously, the years between the World Wars saw Austria favoring a communist system. Adolf Hitler (& the NAZI 3rd Reich) being a Nationalist Socialist movement opposed to communism (they were Fascists) saw fit to incorporate Austria into the Reich before WWII. With the Nazi defeat Austria found itself on the eastern and communist side where we now see the Hammer and Sickle included with broken chains. Gradually Austria was able to ally itself with western economies while still maintaining a strong socialist government. A story expressed in the changing symbols on the coinage. In the section on Austria he has several types of Austrian coins that were counterstamped by Nazi sympathisers in Austria before and after the Anschluss, or the unification of Austria and Germany under the Third Reich. Some thin armed swastikas are considered fantasies that were issued for sale to collectors in the 1960's and '70's. When this specimen was found the counterstamp had been filled with a dark material, after cleaning the C/S was revealed to be the thick armed style that is generally considered to be the type issued for propaganda purposes in the late 1930's and early 1940's. The host coin is an Austrian Groschen of 1927, showing wear on the reverse of the C/S, indicating some circulation after the return to circulation post C/S. This authentic thick armed variety is shown in "Medallic Portraits of Adolf Hitler" by Colbert and Hyder in the introduction section. There it is stated that these counterstamped pieces were made and issued following the leader (Dollfuss) of Austria's ban (1932 - 1933) on Nazi insignia, uniforms and propaganda as a way of keeping the thought of Nazi unification in peoples' minds. This 'restrike' of the iconic 1486 Tyrolean Thaler should be the last restrike or commemorative until the year 2086. But don't count on it. The original 1953 and this 2002 are a bit out of pace, at times the pieces celebrate the Hall mint. The 2002 is a mystery, it's not in 'Unusual World Coins' (2007) and it has a 'F' before the date which represents 700 Years of Hall Austria. [The following by Christina Linsboth from habsburger.net] In the Habsburg lands it was not only salt mining and trading that were important branches of the economy. The entire mining industry boomed from the late Middle Ages on: by 1520 there were some 50,000 people employed in silver mining alone in Schwaz in Tyrol. Archduke Sigismund of Tyrol and his successors, the Emperors Maximilian I, Charles V and Ferdinand I, who granted the mining regions a number of privileges, certainly knew how to make use of the blessings of Tyrol’s mountains. Sigismund stopped delivering silver to Venice for the production of coins. Instead he stamped his own coins in the newly established mint at Hall, which is near Schwaz. The ‘Tyrol pounders’ (Tiroler Pfundner) which were minted there had a special feature: they were the first coins in the German-speaking countries which bore a realistic portrait of the country’s ruler. Moreover, the mint at Hall used new techniques which improved the production and the quality of the coins made there. As kings or emperors of the Holy Roman Empire and at the same time as the sovereign princes of Tyrol, the Habsburgs mortgaged or leased more and more of their sovereign rights to the mining and sale of silver to private entrepreneurs like the Fuggers. At the same time the entrepreneurs and traders developed the practice of selling silver which had not yet been mined for bills of exchange or cash, with two-thirds of the silver mined and sold being exported. Trade in this ‘virtual’ silver became a problem when, towards the middle of the sixteenth century, the profit-making deposits began to be exhausted and silver which had already been sold could not be delivered on time or indeed at all. Mining ore less rich in silver was also far more expensive. This, together with wars and the resulting price rises, the conflicts between the Protestant and Catholic powers in Europe and the consequences of epidemics, led to a crisis in the mining industry in Schwaz. The restrikes began in 1953 and several types are available here in the Museum. The year 1986 was the 500th year and it was struck appropriately on a silver 500 Schilling coin. In hand you do not see these 'proof' impairments, so this needs to be photographed again with a different light. An issue of 2007, featuring an incuse reverse, celebrated the 700 year anniversary of Hall, Tyrol Austria. The town has a lovely Web site that shows the mint museum where you can mint your own miniature version of the first Thaler on a real screw press. See this museum for an example. Elsewhere here in the Austria section of the Moneta Museum you can view an original from 1486, they are quite scarce and desirable with the latest nice example selling for $12,000. These eventually became known as Thalers [or Taler], are known in several denominational names over the succeeding centuries, mainly the dollar. This issue of 1986 celebrated 400 years since the Archduke of Austria, Sigismund [1427 - 1496] minted the first of these. Since there was a preceeding issue of about half-weight [30 Kreuzer] in 1484 there is some controversy of what qualifies as the first taler. While the 30 Kreuzer piece was a landmark large silver piece for the time, it was the Guldiner [aka. Guldengroschen] at 60 Kreuzer value that served as the model for crown sized silver coins. There's a large and interesting story about these coins which I hope to present here. So far I have not been able to show the original here. These were issued by the Hall mint in 5 different versions. The one shown here is the German/Latin version in antiqued finish. Other languages were English, French, Italian & Japanese. There was also a version in English struck on a 5 oz planchet. The original restrike idea was a product of 1953, an example of which is also in the Moneta Museum. Also, an issue of 2003 celebrates 700 Years of Hall, Tyrol with an incuse version imprinted as part of the coin. I have a complete set of all variations if you need photos please contact me. The Tyrolean Resistance Fighters coin was released May 6, 2009 by the Austrian Mint to celebrate the bicentennial of the Tyrolean uprising against Napoleon and his Bavarian allies. It features the likeness of Andreas Hofer, leader of the rebellion and a hero and martyr to the people of Tyrol and Austria. Andreas Hofer was an innkeeper in the Tyrolean region of Austria. Normal for people of the region, he was proud to be Austrian. When the region was transferred to Bavaria in 1805, Hofer and his fellow Tyroleans became defiant. With a promise of support from the Emperor of Austria, Hofer began to organize a rebellion against Bavarian control. Skirmishes with the Bavarian and French forces ensued and the rebels had several successes. Victory was short-lived however, as Napoleon defeated Austrian troops and the rebels' support was withdrawn. Not willing to give up, Hofer assumed command of the rebel forces which numbered approximately 20,000 and eventually won control of the area. He named himself Imperial Commandant of the Tyrol and ruled the area for two months. Peace was short-lived as Tyrol was once again ceded to Bavaria on October 14, 1809. With a promise of amnesty, Hofer and his troops surrendered and returned to their homes. A month later, Hofer tried again to overthrow the Bavarians but was unable to gather support. He retreated into the mountains and hid there. His location was betrayed for a reward and he was captured by authorities in January of 1810. Taken to Italy for trial, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. On February 20, 1810, he was executed by firing squad. His remains were eventually returned to Tyrol and his status as a hero and martyr to the local community remains today. To celebrate the bicentennial of the Tyrolean rebellion, the Austrian Mint released the Tyrolean Resistance Fighters coin. It will be available in circulated condition, a special uncirculated coin in a blisterpack, and in the 2009 Austrian Coin set. Obverse Design This nine sided coin, symbolic for the nine federal provinces of Austria features their coats-of arms encircling the denomination of 5 with the inscription "Republik Osterreich" and "Euro". Reverse Design Beside an image of Andreas Hofer is an image of Giuseppina Negrelli, a woman who also fought in the rebellion. She is featured to acknowledge the part women played in the fight. The inscriptions "Tiroler Freiheit" (Tyrol Freedom) , "1809" and "2009" are also shown. Mintage for circulation 250,000.
