Issued at Shangani,Zanzibar on the 16th. of November 2005. Unusual poundage changes - from 30 Shillings up to 80 Shillings,& back down to 30 Shillings. Zanzibari banknotes are extremely rare,so a Zanzibari-issued Tanzanian postal order is the next best (& affordable!) thing to a Zanzibari banknote. This was a British Protectorate on islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanganyika. It comprised a portion of British East Africa. You've got to love the double pan balance scales (with date between). The translation of the obverse Arabic (photo is reversed) is: "Sultan Said ibn Bargash ibn / Sultan" with "Allah guard him" above and below. The rulers name is incorrect; Bargash was the son of Sayyid Said and not vice-versa. This mistake is unique among coins of comparatively modern times (Freeman Grenville).

2 comments Moneta Sat, 28 Jan 2006 19:19:57 -0500
