Description: There are only four (4) of this variety known. Tentatively cataloged in the Colver and Harley system as KM# Tn2 CH-8 (unlisted as yet) variety. It's place in the variety set was cataloged as 1-D in the ANS, American Numismatic Society site, by Cox. These varieties are best described in Randy Snyder's article in "Penny-Wise" Vo. 40, No. 5 (Sep 2006). As a 1-D variety it is described as Obverse: Small ship, 13 palm leaves, 15 sun rays, '1' in date is to the left of the tree trunk. Bush top at water line. Palms 7th leaf tip is between lower serif of 'I' and 'B.' Reverse: Wide Spaced 'A. D.,' tiny center dot & extra period shows on early strikes. All show boldly re-punched tops of 'FOUND,' tops of 'ON,' and bottom of 1st 'O' in Colonization. Date: Second '1' of 1816 is left of upright of 'D' (of A.D.). This completes my collection of all known varieties of this iconic and historical token. Besides the Randy Snyder article, and here in the Moneta Museum, all of these varieties are illustrated and described no where else. Liberia - Y2K Millennium 20 Dollars

Description: SCWC (KM) lists this as a year 2000 issue, but I suspect in should be 1999 as seen on the obverse. Naturally, it's celebrating the Millennium with various symbols including a prominent Y2K, a big scare for all computers which never materialized. The seated Liberty design was used in a series of coins from Liberia, not too well rendered in my opinion. These are not so common with only 2000 struck and they're an even ounce of pure silver.

Description: Distinquishing features of this variety are OB: 1 in date to the left of trunk, small ship, 15 rays, 13 leaves, bush top at water line. RX: narrow-spaced A.D. A second example, this one shows a hub centering dot as varieties described as having two dots between "A.D.". My other example does not show this upper dot, so it may have worn off due to die polishing. It may actually qualify as another variety. Description: By 2009 the fine series of USA Tribute coins 'authorized' by Liberia, has degraded to this joke on the collecting public. The company responsible for this travesty is "National Collector's Mint". The copy for this $20 (price each) is partially presented below. The rest is too ridiculous to repeat here. One other interesting note is that if you go to their site you might see their photo of this 'coin' with the words "COPY" blurred out. See my photo above (tail feathers). So.. it's a copy of what, exactly? There's a chance that it's there to indicate that it's not a solid silver piece and that the original idea was scaled back to a worthless clad silver piece. Liberia - St. Gaudens Walking Liberty $20 Dollars / $100

Description: I think this is the pinnacle of the Liberian USA Milennium Tribute series. This design depicts the obverse of the original design or proto-design of Saint Gaudens for the 1907 High Relief $20. The reverse is similar to the 'Indian' $10 gold coin. Drawings and plaster models of this pattern design still exist at the Saint Gaudens Historical Society. The main notable differences, and what was eventually, approved are the wingless Victory/Miss Liberty and the feathered headdress. Mexico opted for the winged Victory rather than transforming this classical theme to Liberty with cap. You can see them in the Augustus Saint Gaudens Museum and are depicted in the little book that comes with the 2009 USA Tribute High Relief $50 gold piece. Liberia - Stella, Flowing Hair 4000 Cents / $40 Dollars

Description: Another of the Liberian USA/Millennium Tribute series. This one is of the famous pattern coin known as the Stella. This was a $4 piece (4000 Cents). Mintage for this 'Type 2' is only 410 total, less than the original Sella! PCGS Encapsulated proof 69 DCAM. "The story of the rare, and historic, four-dollar original gold Stellas of 1879 and 1880 is quite interesting. The idea of creating the Stella came from John A. Kasson, minister to Austria-Hungary, as an attempt at an international trade coin. At $4 with a composition of 85.71 percent gold, 4.28 percent silver and 10 percent copper, the Stella, named for the five-pointed star on its reverse, would have been a somewhat strained attempt at producing a U.S. coin more in line with European issues. It’s not easy for such ideas to get any sort of a hearing, but this one got help from Dr. W.W. Hubbell, who was responsible for patenting the gold alloy “goloid” used in making the famous goloid metric dollar. The odds were not the best for the Stella since its value was not the same as the regularly circulating gold coins of Europe, and higher denominations were desired for the bulk of international trade. Even so, the Stella was created. Charles Barber designed the Flowing Hair variety and it may well be his best work at the Mint. The Coiled Hair variety was the work of George T. Morgan, coming just a couple years after his design was used for the Morgan dollar. The long-standing total for the 1879 Flowing Hair variety is 425, but Q. David Bowers estimates this total to be 700 in A Guide Book of United States Type Coins. Bowers places the 1879 Coiled Hair variety total between 20 and 30 pieces." Liberia ACS Token - Rare die combo

Description: American Colonization Society Liberian cent of 1833. This one is a previously unrecorded die combination of the CH1/5 obverse and CH4/6 reverse dies known so far. Other characteristics are that the palm leaves are detached from the trunk (from die polishing) and the underside of the upper serif of 'D' in A.D. is chipped and enlarged. Both features, and the use of die combination, indicate the dies were well worn when used for this very rare variety. The original monograph by Colver and Harley has 6 varieties. This is the 8th and both known examples are presented here.

Liberia - AMERICAN COLONIZATION SOCIETY, ACS; Sun Disc Variety

Description: Here's another of the rare types of Liberia/USA American Colonization Society Cent tokens of 1833. This variety was not seen or documented by the pioneering work of Colver and Harley as seen in the SCWC by KM. Two of the four examples are shown here. The American Numismatic Society does have an exquisite example in their collection. Following CH, this variety is characterized by: OBVERSE: 1)'1' in date under tree trunk; 2) small ship; 3) 22 rays; 4)~ 14 curly palm leaves; 5) bush top at water line; 6) Sun disc is outlined. REVERSE: 1) wide spaced 'AD' with a single period between. Actually both sides exhibit a center planchet punch, although they are very small and not observed in the other specimen of lower condition shown in this museum. This center planchet punch, when visible on the reverse, constitutes the variety described as having 'double periods'. The punch mark on the obverse is seen in the center of the sun disc. Other features noted on this outstanding example is that the sun disc portion between the palm trunk and first ray dissolves from a single strong line into two faint lines. The ray above the bush exhibits a small secondary ray protruding. A comprehensive study of these marvelous and historical A.C.S. tokens will be presented here when it becomes available. Description: Compare this to the Millennium $10 Morgan with the Liberia coat-of-arms reverse. Same obverse design (different die). The reverse represents the eagle & shield type found on the Liberty Seated Dollar (USA). The NCLT aspect is emphasized by the fact that one type is a $10 denomination and the same weight/fineness is also found on this $1 coin. Oh well, it's the tribute that counts! These 'coins' are 130% larger than the original and contain over 130% more silver than the original. Liberia - Gold Quarter Eagle Indian Head Tribute $10

Description: Obverse of this incuse type matches best the size U.S.A. Indian Head $2.50 gold piece. The workmanship is not so exacting as the design by Bela Lyaon Pratt. The reverse is a medallic rotation and the eagle & shield type, seen on the Seated Liberty dollar, is retained. Reeded edge, encapsulated. Mintage is only 500. I bought another that was listed by a highly reputable dealer as Proof. When received it looked just like this one. So this one may be incorrectly labeled by NGC , although it matches KM, or these are actually matte proof. This 22 kt. gold coin (1/10 oz. net weight pure gold) was produced by Australia's official Perth Mint for the Republic of Liberia on the same blank used to mint the American Gold Eagle. Extremely rare -- only 500 made. As a result of President Theodore Roosevelt's opinion that United States coins were "atrociously hideous," new gold coin designs appeared in the early 1900s. Bela Lyon Pratt, who was selected to redesign the $2 1/2 and $5 gold coins, utilized an unusual sculpting technique, similar to that employed thousands of years earlier by Egyptian artists. His "incused" design lies entirely below the coin's surface, in contrast with normal "relief" where the design is higher than the fields. Pratt's native American chieftain design is emblematic of Liberty. Description: Lowest denomination of the series - this one represents the Charles Barber redition of Liberty. The reverse eagle & shield style is most like the type that exists on a Liberty Seated Dollar with 'Heraldic' eagle. Here the eagle wings are set higher like the reverse of a Barber half dollar. I have yet to learn the mintage on this type and it's not listed in KM. Part of the USA Tribute & Millennium series it shows the design of a $10 Indian and the reverse of the Walking Liberty $20 gold piece. I imagine that Liberia has not authorized the minting the obverse of the Walking Liberty $20 and Half dollar types due to the NCLT bullion coin regularly minted by the USA. When President Teddy Roosevelt asked sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create artistic new designs for US coins, Saint-Gaudens initially produced an Indian Head and Flying Eagle design for the $20 gold coins. But only a couple of these were ever produced with the Indian design ... and they are worth over a million dollars each! For the first time, these superb designs appear on an affordable coin, authorized by the Government of Liberia, made from 1 oz. of pure .999 fine gold in gem proof quality. A small number were minted in the USA. Description: Low mintage, as all of the gold NCLT in this series are. Wonderful design that follows the long tradition of Liberty on the coins of Liberia. This may also known as the Amazon design from sales brochures. Seeking confirmation on mintage, & weight. The reverse does show milky toning as seen in the photo. Note: In 1872, chief engraver William Barber proposed an Amazonian capped bust design for all gold coins. Only a single gold pattern set was minted; priceless today! Caution! These may be gilt silver coins, PCGS does not indicate this, and I challenge you to find an 'official' source of information on these. I believe KM only lists one (incuse Indian) of the Liberian Tribute series of NCLT commemoratives. Sun Disc ACS - CH-7

Description: Extremely RARE example of the famous ACS token attributed to Liberia, but minted in the USA as a domestic fundraiser. All other varieties (8) show only rays, this one actually shows the setting sun disc. Die studies (by RS, 'copperhobbie') confirm that this unique variety was the first to be minted. The extreme scarcity (4 known, 2 presented here) indicate that these were probably trial issues that were probably also presentation pieces.

ACS Liberia cent 1833

Description: American Colonization Society Liberian cent of 1833. This one is a previously unrecorded die combination of the CH1/5 obverse and CH4/6 reverse dies known so far. Other characteristics are that the palm leaves are detached from the trunk (from die polishing)and the underside of the upper serif of 'D' in A.D. chipped and enlarged. Both features and the use of die combination indicate the dies were well worn. The original monograph by Colver and Harley has 6 varieties. This is the 8th and both known examples are presented here.

Description: A wonderful 'Millennium' issue. The Liberty cap of old makes a reappearance. Also the current coat-of-arms harkens back to elements of the ACS token (sailing ship) and to the 1847/62/96 issues of setting sun and bird with message. Now a plow has been added. Banner below the flags states: "The Love of Liberty Brought Us Here". Mintage is estimated to be 2,000, if so, that would make it quite a scarce 'Morgan"! Toned areas on the cameo regions are lighting effects & are not actually there. This would be considered a 'bullion' issue. Description: CH-1 & CH-5 are the two 'Small Ship' varieties. At least one of every variety documented by Colver & Harley can be seen in the Museum (+ two undocumented in KM & CH). One, tenatively known as #7, is distiguishable by a visible sun disc; it is very rare (only 4 documented so far) but can be seen here and at the American Numismatic Societies' Web site. (Contact Moneta if you have one for sale, or wish to picture it here!!) The wide-spaced 'A.D.' is what distiguishes CH-1 from CH-5 (wider). Frankly, I am of the opinion that these should be listed as an American token (they are in the Red Book). It is not at all clear that these were ever intended for use in Liberia. The history of the token is still shrouded in mystery. While it is widely believed to have been struck as a fund raising piece by John Gibbs of Belleville, NJ, there are those who believe these are from the US mint (circumstantial evidence abounds). Please keep watch for an important monograph (by R.S.) on these in our Library. Description: Nice red/brown business strike (which for some, as yet, unexplained reason are more scarce than the many proofs offered). Reverse has two stars. The 1833 ACS token featured a sailing vessel. By 1847 we see a steam side paddle-wheeler. Curiously, the current coat-of-arms of Liberia has returned to the sailing vessel. Struck at the Soho mint at Birmingham, UK. Lovely incuse design featuring Miss Liberty in her cap.
