Description: MEXICO. 50 Pesos Restrike, "1947" also known as a "Centenario" from the Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-69. Designed by Emilio del Moral, the coins feature an image of Winged Victory signifying the Angel of Independence. In her right hand, she holds a laurel crown, representing victory. In her left hand, she holds broken chains symbolizing freedom. This image also represents the famed statue, fondly called El Ángel, that the people of Mexico erected in 1910 in central Mexico City to celebrate 100 years since the beginning of their war for independence from Spain. The reverse showcases the Mexican Coat of Arms as well as an eagle atop a cactus devouring a serpent. Fr-172R; KM-481. AGW: 1.2057 oz. Restrike issue from new dies. A nearly flawless example of this iconic large gold type with velvety surfaces and an enticing rich golden color. During 1949-1972 a total of 3,975,654 pieces, most likely dated 1947, were restruck an an additional 473,900 pieces dated 1947 were restruck during 2000-2017. In 1996 matte restrikes were produced. NGC: 48 graded MS 69; twelve higher.

Brazil - 500 Reis 1932, 400th Anniversary of Colonization

Description: Featuring a depiction of Joao Ramalho, was a Portuguese colonist, explorer and adventurer known as the first bandeirante. He lived much of his life among Tupiniquim natives in Brazil after he arrived there in 1515. He even became the leader of an Indian village after he developed a friendship with Tibiriçá (see 100 Reis), an important native chief at the time. Ramalho played an important role in the pacific interaction between the Portuguese and the natives, especially after the arrival of Martim Afonso de Sousa, with whom he became friends after meeting him in São Vicente, the first Portuguese settlement in the Americas. He lived in the village of Santo André da Borda do Campo, which in 1553 was made a town by Tomé de Sousa, then Governor General of Brazil. Ramalho exercised the posts of alderman and alcalde (mayor) in the town.This is the key denomination of the anniversary series with only 34k struck.

Description: Obverse features a depiction the bust of Cazique Tibiriçá, a Tupiniquim leader, ally of the Portuguese. He had a role in the founding of the city of São Paulo (1554). Here's more from Wikipedia: Chief Tibiriçá (died 1562) baptized as Martim Afonso was an Amerindian leader who converted to Christianity under the auspices of José de Anchieta. He led the Tupiniquim people of Piratininga and other tribes. His daughter, Bartira, took the name Isabel and married a Portuguese man named João Ramalho. After his conversion to Christianity he became a strategic ally and protector of the Jesuits and the Portuguese; his name appears on letters to Saint Ignatius of Loyola and King João III of Portugal. Tibiriçá chose to side with the Jesuits and against his own brother Piquerobi with help of his nephew and his son-in-law João Ramalho. His granddaughters and their descendants married Portuguese noblemen that led the colonization of São Paulo under Martim Afonso de Sousa.

Description: Features a map of South America with the Treaty of Tordesillas line displayed, as well as the Equator. The Treaty of Tordesillas, signed in Tordesillas, Spain on 7 June 1494, and authenticated in Setúbal, Portugal, divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between the Portuguese Empire and the Spanish Empire (Crown of Castile), along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands, off the west coast of Africa. That line of demarcation was about halfway between the Cape Verde islands (already Portuguese) and the islands entered by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage (claimed for Castile and León), named in the treaty as Cipangu and Antillia (Cuba and Hispaniola). The lands to the east would belong to Portugal and the lands to the west to Castile, modifying an earlier division proposed by Pope Alexander VI. The treaty was signed by Spain, 2 July 1494, and by Portugal, 5 September 1494. Description: Counter stamped on Mexico 5 Peso KM#467 The so-called Anguilla Liberty Dollar was initiated as a scam by Scott Newhall, then editor of the San Francisco Chronicle. Newhall, on his own, counterstamped between 10 000 and 15 000 mixed coins (mostly silver) with the mark ANGUILLA LIBERTY DOLLAR and JULY 11 1967 before darkening the stamp with ink. Trying to sell his idea to the new provisional government, Newhall failed to have his coin recognized legally and later sold the coins to a coin dealer who kept going with the story to earn money. With the success of these so-called dollars in the coin collectors community, Anguila later issued similar numismatic products in 1968, 1969 and 1970. (Numista). Description: Cuauhtemoc or Quauhtemoc (born c. 1495) was the Mexica ruler of Tenochtitlan from 1520 to 1521, making him the last Aztec Emperor. The name Cuauhtemoc means "one who has descended like an eagle", and is commonly rendered in English as "Descending Eagle," as in the moment when an eagle folds its wings and plummets down to strike its prey. This is a name that implies aggressiveness and determination. Cuauhtemoc took power in 1520 as successor of Cuitlahuac and was a cousin of the late emperor Moctezuma II. His young wife, who was later known as Isabel Moctezuma, was one of Moctezuma's daughters. He ascended to the throne when he was around 25 years old, while Tenochtitlan was being besieged by the Spanish and devastated by an epidemic of smallpox brought to the New World by the invaders. After the killings in the Great Temple, there were probably few Aztec captains available to take the position. (Wikipedia) The 1947 is the first year of issue and has a smaller issue (5.11M) vs. the 1948 issue, which has 26.7M struck.

Description: Coins with face values 1, 2 and 4 cents, dated Uruguay 1869, with mintmark letter A were minted at Paris Mint on 1869. Later, 1, 2 and 4 cents Uruguayan coins dated 1869, with mint letter H and Paraguay dated 1870 (with same face values, material and dimensions) were minted on 1870, Uruguay used the creation law year on the coins (same as the previous issue), and Paraguay the minting year. On the second order, for both countries, the contractor was the company Shaw Hnos. & Co. (Shaw brothers), placed at Montevideo. The catalog “The Mint, Birmingham, Limited, formerly Ralph Heaton & Sons” shows the coins minted for about 39 countries. On page 42, it shows copy of the letter received from Shaw (signed as “Chas. J. Shaw= Charles J. Shaw), about the coins. This letter confirms the “H” 1869 coins of Uruguay were minted by Heaton, and also explains why Uruguayan and Paraguayan coins look so similar, and also that “SHAW” showing on Paraguayan coins is not the engraver, as some people thinks, but the contractor of the mintage. Some authors considered these coins as minted at La Rochelle, France, that also used the “H” letter as mintmark, and it is mentioned at Heritage Auctions on their list for September 15th., 2015 auction# 3042; maybe cause the previous lot was minted at Paris. It accompanies the 2 Peso Centenario commemorative that can also be seen here in the Moneta Museum. The Mexico 50 Peso, or Centenario, was first produced in 1921 to commemorate the centennial of Mexico’s independence from Spain. The Centenario was issued every year from 1921 to 1931 and again from 1944 through 1947. Demand was strong for the coin as a bullion issue, so the Mexico City Mint continued to produce gold 50 Pesos with the 1947 date through 1972 and also in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Additionally, Commemorative Medallic issues without the 50 Peso denomination were issued in 1943 and several dates in the 1950’s and 1960’s. In 1910 Mexico celebrated the Centennial of the beginning of its War of Independence with Spain. To commemorate the event, a giant column was erected in the middle of Mexico City with a statue of "El Angel de la Independencia", "The Angel of Independence", sitting atop. This 6.7-meter statue, constructed of Bronze and Gold, represents the "Winged Victory", a Greek symbol for the goddess Nike (Victory). In her right hand the Angel holds a laurel crown, symbolizing Victory, while in her left she holds a broken chain, symbolizing Freedom. The obverse (front) of the Mexican 50 Pesos features a striking portrait of Winged Victory standing in front of the Mexican volcanoes Iztacc'huatl and Popocat'ptl. This coin is often compared to America's most beautiful coin, the $20 Saint-Gaudens. The obverse also lists the face value ('50 PESOS'), the gold content, and the date of issue opposite the date of Mexican Independence, 1821. Jamaica - 20 Dollars 1972 - 10th Anniversary

Description: An issue to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Independence from the UK. It shows a nice rendition of the large island and the flagship "Nina" which is known to have been one of the ships used by Columbus in the 1492 first voyage. Christopher Columbus was the first European to see Jamaica, claiming the island for Spain after landing there in 1494 on his second voyage to the Americas. His probable landing point was Dry Harbor, called Discovery Bay, and St. Ann's Bay was named "Saint Gloria" by Columbus, as the first sighting of the land. He later returned in 1503; however, he was shipwrecked and he and his crew were forced to live on Jamaica for a year while waiting to be rescued. [Wikipedia]. 30,000 were minted in UNC and 20k more in proof.

Description: Now days you hate to mention 'colonization' in relation to Europeans occupying native lands. For historical reasons, that are now too late to undo, we'll have to chalk this up as lessons learned before colonizing Mars. This example features a sailing ship with Portugese Cross with 1532 - 1932 above. This example is hard to find in uncirculated condition and this one is better that the one shown in KM; 596 k were struck. The land now called Brazil was claimed for the Portuguese Empire on 22 April 1500, with the arrival of the Portuguese fleet commanded by Pedro Álvares Cabral. The Portuguese encountered indigenous peoples divided into several tribes, most of whom spoke languages of the Tupi–Guarani family, and fought among themselves. Though the first settlement was founded in 1532, colonization effectively began in 1534, when King John III of Portugal divided the territory into the fifteen private and autonomous Captaincy Colonies of Brazil.

Description: I believe this nice example to be the High Relief version with fine reeding. These are determined by a more distinct valley on the star and light strike of the palm & key on the obverse. This example is just off UNC with great luster over most of the surface. No distractions on a light golden tone. I believe these were struck at the Philadelphia mint. Photo does not do justice...

Legend: HOMENAJE A LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DE AMERICA 1776 1976 2000 CORDOBAS [Translation: Tribute to the USA 1776-1976 2000 Cordobas] Mintage for this NCLT [non-circulating legal tender] BU issue is just 320, with a proof version of just 100. There are at least three other coins in this series for the US Bicentennial, the other design features the Liberty Bell. They're struck in various denominations in gold and silver. Curiously, other NCLT issues for 1975 target the UN, and the Vatican. The other special issues is for Earthquake relief. I'm thinking these out of place coins have something to do with currying favor for help with the earthquake (Dec '72). It took 20 years before Managua saw earnest efforts to rebuild.

Description: Antonio Sucre was a able lieutenant of the famous liberator Simon Bolivar. He's responsible for the freedom of Ecuador in 1822, following his victory at the Battle of Pinchincha (May 24 1822). Ecuador became independent in 1830. The Sucre denomination is a tribute to him. This is the largest silver issue of this period and the 1943 has the lowest mintage of this two year type at 1 M struck.

Description: Nice example of the silver 10 Centavos piece of 1960 featuring the Monolith De Quirigua, which is the largest stone monolith quarried by the Maya. It features the figure of king K'ak' Tiliw Chan Yopaat. This King had a military victory over Copán in 738 A.D. and the monolith dates from this period. Fourteen different 10 Centavos pieces were struck between 1949 and 2000 featuring this monolith.

Description: Another beautiful design from Brazil featuring Liberty with sickle & cornucopia. The image appears to emulate a trend of the times around the world showing a national maiden at harvest time in the vein of Ceres, therefore it qualifies as an entry in my special theme category. These are difficult to find in BU and usually show worn dies. This example is better than average for the type.

Description: First year of the Federal Republic of Brazil and a one year type with 4.541 M minted. The Republic of Brazil was formed on the demise of ht Empire of Brazil. Depicted is a nice rendition of Lady Liberty with Liberty Cap. The reverse center design features a close-up element of the Brazilian flag with the constellation of the "Southern Cross" on horizontal lines representing a dark blue background. The modern symbol on the flag includes this constellation and other stars representing representing each Federative unit or state. "ORDEM E PROGRESSO" means Order and Progress.

Buenos Aires - Un Decimo 1822

Description: This the first type and year of coinage that Matthew Robinson Boulton and James Watt struck for South America. This was the first British coiner to contract with areas that were formally under Spanish control. Argentina was not fully consolidated into one country so Buenos Ayres (as they spelled it then), the main city and province of Argentina, contracted for Un Decimo coinage beginning in 1822. This was a minor coinage valued at 1/10th of a silver Real. This turns out to be milestone coinage in another way. The issues of 1822 (~ 4 million) were the last coins struck on the directly steam operated presses at Soho, Birmingham. In this transition period to the opening of the third Boulton mint the Un Decimo coins of 1823 were minted at the new facility but with hand driven presses for the second issue of around 4 million pieces. These coins were relatively short lived. Argentine authorities recalled this coinage in 1827 and very many (est. of about half) of the Un Decimos were restruck into the 5/10 Real issues of the Banco Nacional of Buenos Ayres.

Venezuela - Guayana Half Real (1813 - 1817)

Description: Here's a great example of a purchasing mistake due to lack of proper research. The seller described this as a 1/2 Quarto from Gibraltar during 1700's. Great! I've never heard of any Gibraltar coins prior to 1802, this is a great find for a Gibraltar collector I told myself. Two months later, after enlisting the help of Bob Reis (anythinganywhere.com), I find out that this coin is a pretty good and historical find of Venezuela - IF it has a visible date and is in decent condition. Date is off the flan and the flan is the more common small type (22 - 27mm) . And yes, that's a Lion on the reverse [sides reversed in photo]. GUYANA, Fernando VII, struck in the Guiana Mint.

Description: I like depictions of wheat - the staff of life since 10,000 B.C.E. There is a much nicer coin issued in 1930 with a seated liberty figure and wheat. This issue of 1942 was a 18M one year issue. The planchet here appears to be highly irregular.

Description: A very good example, in hand, but the photo is not so great. Interesting one year issue depicting a walking Puma with sunset behind. This low silver has a nice iridescent sheen on the reverse Puma side. Santiago mint issued 9 M of these and this one here is actually better than KM, appears to be hard to find in better shape.

Description: This is a great design by Patey, and this depiction of a South American Indian on a possession of France, makes this coin in demand in higher conditions. Special strikes and those done in silver also exist. This coin was struck again in 1921 and also in a 50 Centimes denomination. I believe this coin is also known to be the one with the most sides, while looking round, it actually has 20 sides. The reverse image is of a major source of revenue for this island near South America, sugar cane. Mintage for both years 700k each.

Mexico - Aztec Medicine

Description: I'm now using this medal as and introduction to the Mexican Pre-Colombian series, although it is not part of the series. This depiction of an Aztec healer is very well done. The medal is for the Miles Institute of Therapeutic Experimentation. It sounds as scary as the Aztec medicine man looks. In hand the silver has a nice sheen and the toning blends much better. Today, the Institute is part of the University of Guadalajara, and Pfizer seems to have something to do with it.
