Description: The area of Somalia became strategically important after the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869. It's located on the "Horn" of Africa in the northeast. Britain declared it a protectorate in 1888 but he Sultan of Zanzibar sold it to Italy in 1895. Britain regained control again in 1941, during the occupation of northern Africa in 1941. It was returned to Italy as a UN Trusteeship in 1950. This is when this one year type coin featuring the head of an elephant was struck in Rome. My interest in it is that it was designed by the famous Romagnoli who designed so many wonderful coins of Italy. This coin, being the lowest denomination, has the second lowest mintage at 4 M.

Description: This is a commemorative Revolution issue, not issued for circulation but in a denomination of 100 Piastres or 1 Pound Egyptian. Issued on the 3rd Anniversary of the 1952 Revolution, the 1957 issue celebrates the 5th year. The obverse features an ancient Egyptian war chariot with Pharaoh Ramses II shooting a bow. Lettering: ثورة ٢٣ يوليه ١٩٥٢ Translation: Revolution July 23 of 1952 Reverse: Vulture wings and cobra heads (symbols of Ancient Egypt) flanking the disk of the sun (God Amun Ra) Lettering: جمهورية مصر جينه واحد ١٣٧٤ - ١٩٥٥ Translation: Republic of Egypt One Pound 1955 - 1374 These iconic issues were first struck in 1955 and again in 1957. This 1955 issue had 16,000 struck and it's a very desirable coin. It was struck in yellow and red gold. I've never seen one that looked reddish, and at 10k struck, the 1957 is less seldom seen.

Description: These tokens were used in East Griqualand (later the Transkei homeland) until 1932. This example is of the "New" variety, the last of the series. All of the tokens were holed at 12 o'clock. "The Strachan & Co tokens were minted in Europe, and first issued in 1874. The most sought after and best researched South African trade token. There are only 60 full sets known to exist in the world. Over 20,000 coins were counted in 1980 when research on these tokens was first undertaken in Umzimkulu by Scott Balson."

Description: The Congo Free State was the personal property of King Leopold II of Belgium until 1908 when it was annexed by the Kingdom of Belgium. The Free State issued coins in denominations of 1 centime, 2 centimes, 5 centimes, 10 centimes, 50 centimes, 1 Franc, 2 Francs, and 5 Francs. Most are quite common though their mintages are relatively small. This 1 centime is a two year type coin with a total mintage released at 55,000.

Liberia - AMERICAN COLONIZATION SOCIETY, ACS: CH8

Description: There are only four (4) of this variety known. Tentatively cataloged in the Colver and Harley system as KM# Tn2 CH-8 (unlisted as yet) variety. It's place in the variety set was cataloged as 1-D in the ANS, American Numismatic Society site, by Cox. These varieties are best described in Randy Snyder's article in "Penny-Wise" Vo. 40, No. 5 (Sep 2006). As a 1-D variety it is described as Obverse: Small ship, 13 palm leaves, 15 sun rays, '1' in date is to the left of the tree trunk. Bush top at water line. Palms 7th leaf tip is between lower serif of 'I' and 'B.' Reverse: Wide Spaced 'A. D.,' tiny center dot & extra period shows on early strikes. All show boldly re-punched tops of 'FOUND,' tops of 'ON,' and bottom of 1st 'O' in Colonization. Date: Second '1' of 1816 is left of upright of 'D' (of A.D.). This completes my collection of all known varieties of this iconic and historical token. Besides the Randy Snyder article, and here in the Moneta Museum, all of these varieties are illustrated and described no where else. Description: These are commonly seen in BU with 100k struck, this example is listed as prooflike in KM with 2000 struck, but the slab shows this unusual design as a proof 66. 10th Anniversary of the West African Monetary Union. The fish is actually a gold weight in West Africa and it's a symbol for prosperity known as a "Taku." The seven shields on the reverse represent the 7 States of West Africa.

Description: Proof J.F. Kennedy & Moon Landing piece that was struck at the Brussels mint in 1970 for the 10th Anniversary of Independence from France. Please comment otherwise, but I believe this should also be considered in the Space/Apollo Moon Landing theme of coins. Of course Kennedy initiated the effort "To land a man on the moon..." and this scarce piece shows the moon with the Command Vehicle in orbit. Chad is a land locked country with a varied terrain and around 200 different cultural heritages. The JFK piece has the same reverse as the others, featuring a bold view of the continent of Africa where Chad is outlined in the central area of the Sahara desert. This 300 Francs coin has a mintage of only 504 struck, all in proof. A set was issued featuring Martin Luther King and the two Kennedy brothers, all three were assassinated. Robert Francis Kennedy (November 20, 1925 – June 6, 1968) was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 64th United States Attorney General from January 1961 to September 1964, and as a U.S. Senator from New York from January 1965 until his assassination in June 1968. Kennedy, like his brothers John and Edward, was a prominent member of the Democratic Party and has come to be viewed by some historians as an icon of modern American liberalism. On May 25, 1961 Kennedy announced the goal of going to the moon in a speech titled "Special Message to the Congress on Urgent National Needs": ".. In 1958, he came out of retirement when appointed President of the Council of Ministers by President René Coty. He was asked to rewrite the Constitution of France and founded the Fifth Republic after approval by referendum. Description: SCWC (KM) lists this as a year 2000 issue, but I suspect in should be 1999 as seen on the obverse. Naturally, it's celebrating the Millennium with various symbols including a prominent Y2K, a big scare for all computers which never materialized. The seated Liberty design was used in a series of coins from Liberia, not too well rendered in my opinion. These are not so common with only 2000 struck and they're an even ounce of pure silver.

Description: The title says all I know, it's supposed to be a Allied Forces issue of France in 1944. These are commonly available in much better shape but without these wonderful colors. If you know more, such as a catalog reference, please let me know more so I can include it here. Soldiers involved in the landing of Provence received these coins, which circulated in the south of France and Algeria. This unofficial coin was regulated by the Minister of Finance on June 25, 1945.
